СÂÜÀòÓ°ÊÓ Space Reporter on how massive solar flare could impact DC-area skies /science/2023/12/wtop-space-reporter-on-how-massive-solar-flare-could-impact-dc-area-skies/ Sun, 17 Dec 2023 03:09:27 +0000 /?p=25558668 Earlier this week the National Weather Service .

The agency said the geomagnetic storm disrupted radio communications for two hours onboard some aircraft, but the effects might not be over yet. Over the weekend, this coronal mass ejection could lead to quite the light show — a colorful display of the aurora borealis or Northern Lights — in some sections of the country that normally don’t get to see the spectacle.

Greg Redfern, a NASA Solar system ambassador and СÂÜÀòÓ°ÊÓ Space reporter, said those looking for the northern lights are likely to be let down by Earth’s weather.

“Any effect of being able to see the northern lights, until the clouds clear, is not going to happen,” Redfern said, adding that “there isn’t any alert for our area” that would indicate a chance to see the northern lights Sunday night.

Over the next few days, Redfern said, there’s a chance for more strong storms to appear as the sun moves toward its “solar maximum.”

“This means that the sun is going to be more active,” Redfern said.

However, he says, the D.C. area shouldn’t give up hope when it comes to seeing the northern lights.

“Don’t give up hope,” Redfern said, “because we have seen aurora in Virginia three times this year.”

Lincoln Memorial reopens after graduation celebration leaves litter /dc/2022/05/lincoln-memorial-closed-to-clean-up-litter-from-local-university-graduates/ /dc/2022/05/lincoln-memorial-closed-to-clean-up-litter-from-local-university-graduates/#respond Sat, 21 May 2022 19:50:57 +0000 /?p=23642794 D.C.’s Lincoln Memorial was closed for cleaning Saturday morning after National Mall officials said students from a local university celebrating their graduation left the area littered with trash.

The National Park Service said the memorial reopened to the public just before noon Saturday following a quick cleaning to remove broken bottles, spilled wine, Champagne and other trash that had covered the building’s iconic steps.

“Thanks to our facilities staff for the quick clean up this morning. The Lincoln Memorial is open. We appreciate your patience,” NPS tweeted.

Park officials did not specify which school they believe was involved. Georgetown University issued a statement after reports its students were among those celebrating at the memorial early Saturday, saying the school was monitoring “concerning and disappointing” activity.

“While Georgetown is one of several institutions celebrating graduation ceremonies this weekend, we have had no university-sponsored events at or around the Lincoln Memorial,” a Georgetown spokesperson told СÂÜÀòÓ°ÊÓ. “We expect all members of our community to be responsible citizens of our campus and our city and be respectful of the history and institutions of Washington.”
