Water said an abandoned, century鈥憃ld sewer tunnel beneath the roadway is at risk of collapsing.

鈥淲e had a watermain break in the area some time ago, and at that time we discovered this century-old, brick-lined sewer tunnel had not been filled 50 years ago when it was abandoned,鈥 said Sherri Lewis, a spokesperson for D.C. Water.

The road was shut down early Saturday as a precaution.

鈥淔or public safety it was important that we get this road closed,鈥 Lewis said. 鈥淲e couldn鈥檛 have heavy vehicles riding over it.”

Engineers deployed cameras into the structure and found a 70-inch crack along the top of the old tunnel. If the tunnel were to collapse, it could lead the road above it to sink.

To avoid that, the plan is to carefully fill the old 42-inch sewer tunnel with a special engineered material that will help support the road and reduce any further risk.

The work needs skilled crews and specialized equipment, and it鈥檚 expected to take a few days.

D.C. Water hopes to begin the work by midweek when temperatures are expected to be more accommodating for this type of repair. The utility company is aiming to get the lanes back open by the end of the week.

In the meantime, detours are in place and northbound drivers are being directed to use 13th or 15th streets.

said pedestrian access is being maintained where it is safe.

Southbound lanes on 14th Street remain open.

Virginia Lottery warns of consumer scams /virginia/2022/03/virginia-lottery-warns-of-consumer-scams/ /virginia/2022/03/virginia-lottery-warns-of-consumer-scams/#respond Mon, 21 Mar 2022 17:27:52 +0000 /?p=23460899 The Virginia Lottery said it has noticed an uptick in reports of lottery scams and is launching a new campaign to protect consumers.

The seeks to inform consumers not only about fake lottery scams, but also ways to protect themselves from various types of fraud.

The lottery agency said that in most cases, criminals try to convince intended victims they have won a large prize. They might falsely identify themselves as being with the Virginia Lottery or a familiar gaming organization, such as Mega Millions or Powerball. Then, they鈥檒l ask for money to claim your prize 鈥 something lottery officials say they would never do.

Here are some other tips from the Virginia Lottery:

  • Do sign your ticket upon purchase. The person who signs the ticket owns it.
  • Don’t post photos of a winning ticket on social media before redeeming it. The photo could show information that someone else could use to claim your prize.
  • Do make use of self-service scanning devices available at every retail and vending location and on the lottery鈥檚 mobile app. Don鈥檛 rely on someone else to tell you if your ticket is a winner.
  • Don’t place your ticket in anyone else鈥檚 hands without knowing what it鈥檚 worth.
  • Do check the ticket you bought before you leave the store to confirm it鈥檚 the game you want, the numbers you want and the drawing(s) you want.
  • Don’t send anyone money or give personal information to someone who contacts you claiming you鈥檝e won the lottery. These types of requests are associated with fake lottery scams.
  • Do know the rules for claiming a winning ticket before the prize expires.

If you suspect you may have been scammed, reach out to the Virginia Attorney General鈥檚 Office of Consumer Protection鈥檚 hotline at 800-552-9963.
