Avoiding a potential killer this winter: carbon monoxide poisoning /health-fitness/2026/01/crawford-carbon-monoxide-poisoning/ Sun, 25 Jan 2026 22:29:19 +0000 /?p=28845180&preview=true&preview_id=28845180 The extreme cold weather and the threat of power outages may have folks turning to space heaters or alternative forms of heat. But that can carry a risk that can cause severe sickness and even death.

The danger is carbon monoxide, or CO 鈥 a colorless, odorless gas.

“It’s called the ‘silent killer,’ mostly because it is somewhat insidious,” said Dr. Chloe McCoy, an emergency room physician with MedStar Health. “A lot of the symptoms are nonspecific and may feel like flu-like symptoms.”

Using space heaters, gas furnaces, fireplaces and portable generators that don’t have proper ventilation can put CO into your home.

Advanced cases can leave someone feeling confused and disoriented, and it can even cause them to pass out. If you start feeling symptoms like that, and you’re using a generator or alterative heat source, turn it off if possible.

Then, McCoy said, “You need to get out of the house.”

“Getting exposed to fresh air is the first priority, and then the second priority is to call 911 and have emergency services address the issue,” she said.

DC region utility companies ready resources for possible storm-related power outages /dc/2026/01/crawford-power-preparations/ Sun, 25 Jan 2026 19:28:39 +0000 /?p=28841990&preview=true&preview_id=28841990 We may be feeling effects from the snow, ice and below-freezing temperatures we’re expecting for the next few days.

After the immediate snow, the bigger concern will be the freezing rain and ice expected to form on tree branches and power lines that could bring them down and potentially leave you in the dark.

Chuck McDade, a senior communications specialist with Pepco, urged the public to make sure their most important devices, such as their phones or medical equipment, were fully charged should the current sleet falling across the region turn to freezing rain.

“Now’s the time to charge it while the power is still on, and everything is fine,” McDade said. “Right now it’s just really a wait and see what happens with the rest of the storm.”

Utility companies in D.C., Maryland and Virginia have been preparing for this for days, getting resources in place to respond quickly.

How much ice we get and where the power lines go down may affect how quickly crews can get your power restored.

McDade urged customers to report any outages and to report any downed wires or damaged equipment, underscoring the importance of keeping a safe distance from compromised devices.

“We do ask if an outage does occur, to have some patience. We want our crews to get home safely at the end of the day so they can get out there make those repairs,” he said. “But it is a little bit different than a thunderstorm, where you can go out, you can assess the damage and start making repairs. But with the road conditions, you do have to take that into consideration.”

Aisha Khan at Dominion Energy in Virginia told 小萝莉影视 it could be hours and potentially days before power may be fixed.

“I do want to emphasize that this could be gradual restoration,” Khan said.

Khan also urged caution if you encounter a downed power line. “Stay away from those power lines. Always assume they are energized. We ask that you stay 30 feet away,” she said.

Both Pepco and Dominion say you should have enough food and water for 72 hours, in case the power goes out, and make sure your phone is charged up.

If your power does go out, always call your utility to let them know 鈥 don’t assume it already knows.

Pepco’s Tammy Sanford, the director of regional power operations, previously told 小萝莉影视 that there’s one thing the public can do to help crews speed up the restoration process: stay off the roads.

“Please, if you don’t need to be out on the roads, it’s going to be really important that first responders, including fire, police and our crews, can safely make their way around our system,” she said.

How an hour in January can help your finances throughout the year /consumer-news/2026/01/money-tips-for-the-new-year/ Sun, 04 Jan 2026 21:02:49 +0000 /?p=28767542&preview=true&preview_id=28767542 Mapping out a financial plan for the new year is a task many put off, because it sounds daunting and time-consuming. But one financial expert said it doesn’t have to be that scary, and it doesn’t need to take that long.

“I wish our listeners would just take an hour or two to set aside time and hire yourself to dive into your finances,” said Barry Glassman, founder and president of Glassman Wealth Services.

Within the hour or so that’s set aside, Glassman said the time can easily be used to establish automated payment schedules and savings allocations.

“So let’s say you wanted to build up a cash reserve, you want to set aside money to buy a house. Take a look at your 401(k) holding,” Glassman said. “Make sure you’re getting the match, those kinds of things. Set those things up automatically in January.”

Reviewing credit card statements is also key, Glassman said, as many include summaries that lay out specifically how funds are being spent.

“If you see where your money went last year, nine times out of 10 you’ll likely reprioritize where you want to spend in 2026,” he said. “If you’re sharing expenses with a loved one or a roommate, go through those expenses and have an open conversation. Is this where we want our money to go in 2026?”

It’s also worth prioritizing investment interests for the year, and figuring out the dollar amount that will go toward the rainy day fund. Glassman said even five bucks a week can go a long way over time.

“A lot of people are overwhelmed with, ‘I don’t know how to start saving,'” Glassman said. “Start small. If it’s $10, if it’s $100, it doesn’t matter.”

When it comes to useful financial planning tools, AI chatbots can also be used to help identify best ways to save and plan, according to Glassman.

2025’s economic bottom line, from tariffs to the K-shaped economy /business-finance/2025/12/2025-economy/ Thu, 25 Dec 2025 13:46:36 +0000 /?p=28735737&preview=true&preview_id=28735737 Sorting out our topsy-turvy economy and looking ahead to 2026, Bankrate’s Mark Hamrick still says, “there are reasons to be optimistic.”

“Certainly a volatile, disruptive year, and unfortunately I think those characteristics are going to be very much with us in 2026,” he said.

Hamrick points to five major issues that made for a rough economic ride in 2025, many of which revolved around President Donald Trump’s policies and one of which rocked how other countries trade with the United States.

“Tariffs in April,” he said, “the backing down from the absolute highest level of tariffs, but not much.”

Those import duties were a factor for the holidays, with high import duties on China affecting prices on toys to electronics to fake Christmas trees.

Hamrick also points to Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” signed July Fourth, and the tax effects of which the public will feel going into the new year and beyond, and the 43-day government shutdown that idled federal workers until almost Thanksgiving. That will also be a headline going into 2026, as the stopgap spending bill that ended the longest shutdown in U.S. history is set to expire by Jan. 30.

But, there were two other issues from 2025 that Hamrick pointed to that will also linger into the new year.

“The continuation of affordability challenges that hit Americans where they live and in their everyday personal financial lives,” he said, which gave rise to an economic term that many of us had never heard before: The K-Shaped Economy.

“That’s related to affordability,” Hamrick said, “but also accumulation of wealth, or lack thereof.”

And that is a theme we may be hearing more of in 2026.

‘Flirtatious’ behavior from National Zoo’s pandas caught on camera /dc/2025/05/pandas-show-positive-interest-in-each-other-national-zoo-staff-says/ Sun, 18 May 2025 21:27:40 +0000 /?p=27406186 It’s probably not much of anything yet, but Qing Bao and Bao Li are at least getting curious about each other.

That’s what staff at the National Zoo in D.C. said .

They were caught on video last month “bleating” at each other.

The zoo said that’s a sign of “flirtatious feelings” from the normally solitary pandas.

By the end of April, Bao Li and Qing Bao went from checking in with each other every once in a while to “spending all their time near the howdy window,” the zoo said.

The staff at the National Zoo has been testing Qing Bao’s hormones, and said she shows signs of changes that would get her ready for pregnancy. , zookeepers said that Qing Bao’s estrogen levels were high, indicating that she was in an “estrus cycle.”

But Bao Li, like males of most species, will mature more slowly, according to staff.

So, while it’s promising, don’t print the birth announcements just yet.

By early May, while the bears were still interested in one another and vocalized at times, they occasionally walked away, but the staff said that eventually, both bears will “get back into the groove of their normal routine.”

H.R. 691 was introduced by Republican Rep. Addison McDowell, and it appears to be similar to one introduced last year by a Pennsylvania representative who’s co-sponsoring this measure.

“President Donald Trumpwon a historic victory, and honoring his legacy at Dulles is an easy decision,” .

The airport opened in 1962 and was named for John Foster Dulles, who served as former President Dwight Eisenhower’s secretary of state until shortly before his death in 1959.

The new measure has been referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

Washington Post editorial cartoonist exits amid dispute over nixed drawing /dc/2025/01/washington-post-editorial-cartoonist-exits-amid-dispute-over-nixed-drawing/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 17:54:48 +0000 /?p=26839348 The Washington Post’s editorial cartoonist has quit.

Pulitzer Prize-winner Ann Telnaes made the announcement in an online听post on Friday.

Telnaes said she made the decision after the newspaper killed a cartoon poking fun at Post owner Jeff Bezos and other media and tech figures kneeling before President-elect Trump, some with bags of money.

“I have had editorial feedback and productive conversations 鈥 and some differences 鈥 about cartoons I have submitted for publication,鈥 Telnaes wrote, 鈥渂ut in all that time I鈥檝e never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at. Until now.鈥

The Post’s editorial page editor, David Shipley, said he disagrees with Telnaes’ interpretation of events.

In a statement emailed to 小萝莉影视 on Saturday, Shipley said that his decision not to run the cartoon was based on having already run opinion columns on the same topic.

鈥淢y decision was guided by the fact that we had just published a column on the same topic as the cartoon and had already scheduled another column 鈥 this one a satire 鈥 for publication,” Shipley wrote. “The only bias was against repetition.”

Telnaes joined the Post in 2008.

She won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 2001 while with Tribune Media Service, and she was nominated twice more for her work with the Post.

Telnaes posted her announcement, which includes a draft of the disputed cartoon, on .

Alexandria City Public Schools to launch new safety measures after fights leave students, staff injured /alexandria/2024/12/alexandria-city-public-schools-to-launch-new-safety-measures-after-fights-leave-students-staff-injured/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 12:33:59 +0000 /?p=26797329 Virginia’s Alexandria City Public Schools will implement new safety and security measures at Alexandria City High School after winter break.

The announcement comes in the wake of a series of fights at the school’s King Street campus around noon Tuesday that kept students held up in classrooms and shifted the entire district to virtual learning through the beginning of the holiday break.

In a Friday email to the community, District Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt said additional security will be deployed at the King Street and Minnie Howard campuses.

“Their presence, along with our dedicated school-based staff, will help us facilitate a positive re-entry experience for our students after Winter Break. In addition, there will be various changes that will be implemented at Alexandria City High School (ACHS) that we have diligently worked on planning over the past two days,” Kay-Wyatt said.

Changes include repositioned security cameras, increased hall sweeps by District personnel during the school day and additional supervision at lunch.

“We must be clear: We will not tolerate disruptive and violent behavior in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). Students who engage in such behavior will face immediate and significant consequences in accordance with the , up to and including placement in an alternative educational setting or expulsion, in order to ensure the safety of students and staff,” Kay-Wyatt wrote in .

The superintendent also noted that violating its policies could also have legal consequences. So far, police have arrested two students who they believe were involved in Wednesday’s melee.

Officers responding to the fights said another student was treated for injuries related to the fights. Information on staff injuries was not shared following the fights Tuesday.

Kay-Wyatt said this District’s work will also include “intensified support” for students, collaboration with the city officials and a more intent focus “on the underlying issues that lead to these incidents by offering comprehensive social-emotional supports as a means of prevention.”

“This has become an inflection point 鈥 a moment to reflect, reset and strengthen our commitment to each other and to the core values that guide our work as educators and as a community. I firmly believe that if we come together 鈥 students, staff, families and community members 鈥 we will rise above these challenges and restore a calm, respectful and vibrant learning environment for all of our students where they feel valued, respected and ready to thrive,” Kay-Wyatt said.

Students and staff return to the school on Jan. 6, 2025.

DC health roundtable discusses how to improve care for moms and babies /dc/2024/12/dc-health-roundtable-discusses-how-to-improve-care-for-moms-and-babies/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 23:07:04 +0000 /?p=26791241 Local and federal health leaders gathered Thursday to talk about ways to give new moms in D.C. and their babies a better start.

The roundtable at the in Southwest D.C. marked a yearlong nationwide “Enhancing Maternal Health” initiative tour by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The focus was on making sure pregnant women and their families know what resources are available to support new moms in the crucial months after a baby is born. And that’s key for new parents in D.C., where is three times higher than that of white mothers.

“A lot of maternal mortality actually happens in that year postpartum,” said Carole Johnson, administrator of the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, the HHS agency spearheading the effort.

She said the key is getting prenatal, birthing and postpartum resources to as many families as possible.

In terms of getting support in place for moms and their little ones, Community of Hope CEO and President Kelly Sweeney McShane said they’re starting to make inroads.

“We are seeing great outcomes in terms of improving the number of babies who are born at full term and at healthy birth weights, and really making sure that women are coming back for their postpartum care,” she said.

One support in place at Community of Hope is a midwife program that can help bring prenatal, birthing and postnatal care right into the home.

“Midwives provide full prenatal care, postpartum care, we also do GYN, newborn care,” said Dr. Ebony Marcelle, midwifery director at Community of Hope. “A lot of people don’t realize that we take care of babies for the first 28 days of life. We are the specialists of not-of-hospital birth. Some of us practice delivering at home or birthing centers, but the majority of certified nurse midwifes in this country actually practice catching babies in the hospital.”

Johnson said the initiative is needed, because infant and maternal mortality is a real-world issue, and that’s why President Joe Biden’s administration tried to get more resources to more moms to help them and their babies.

Expanded alcohol sales in Maryland? Some businesses aren’t happy with that idea /maryland/2024/12/expanded-alcohol-sales-in-maryland-some-businesses-arent-happy-with-that-idea/ Thu, 12 Dec 2024 20:11:18 +0000 /?p=26764940&preview=true&preview_id=26764940 While some Marylanders are excited about efforts to change state laws regulating where alcohol is sold, local business owners are concerned about potential impacts of expanding sales beyond liquor stores.

As it stands, Marylanders generally can’t buy alcohol in the state’s grocery stores, but Gov. Wes Moore has come out in favor of a proposal to change that.

“Maryland is one of only states in the nation that bans the sale of beer and wine in grocery stores – it’s time for a change,” . “Lifting this ban puts people first and makes us more competitive. I look forward to working with our legislative partners to pass this overdue change.”

Read more:听

The state’s alcohol sales are governed by a 1978 law that prohibits chain stores from selling alcohol and denies alcohol licenses to nonstate residents. Those pushing for the change argue that consumers want more choices. Previous attempts to change the law have fallen flat with delegates in the Maryland General Assembly.

Local beer and wine stores have a loyal following in many Maryland communities. It’s where you get that craft beer you’re looking for, or that nice bottle of wine you heard about.

But those stores 鈥 many of them small businesses 鈥 could be in trouble if they have to compete against grocery stores and big box retailers.

“If you look at anytime they open up a Costco that sells alcohol, all the other stores in the immediate area close down. No one can compete with Costco’s buying power,” said David, a manager at Lance’s Beer and Wine in downtown Bethesda. He asked that 小萝莉影视 not use his last name.

He added that the proposal wouldn’t just hurt shops like his.

“It’s also going to affect a lot of the craft and smaller producers that really need, you know, core markets,” David told 小萝莉影视. “They just can’t be in just every single store, due to production.”

Just a few blocks away, Fred Namin manages Cork 57 Beer and Wine.

“I hope this legislation does not go through,” Namin said.

Physically, it’s not a very big shop. But it’s across the street from a Giant supermarket, which could become a giant competitor if it was able to offer products at a lower cost.

“This law coming out, it could be absolutely hurting the small businesses like us,” Namin said.

Among other things, he worries that allowing grocery stores to carry beer and wine could actually hurt consumer choices.

“A lot of our customers that’s living in this area here rely on our inventory and our selection, and we’re working really hard on keeping the lower prices,” he said.

Namin said he’d be willing to go to Annapolis to testify against the legislation in the General Assembly.

Trump Impact: Federal workers could lose job protections under incoming Trump administration. Here’s why /government/2024/11/federal-workers-could-lose-job-protections-under-incoming-trump-administration-heres-why/ Sat, 09 Nov 2024 20:47:32 +0000 /?p=26638667 This story is part of 小萝莉影视’s ongoing series, Trump Impact, which looks at how the new administration could change the D.C. region.

Many federal workers are viewing President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House with caution. The unions that represent federal workers are concerned over how contract negotiations with federal agencies could proceed during a second Trump administration.

“Many federal unions saw policies that limited their abilities for collective bargaining, limited their ability to negotiate, ability to use ‘official time’ — that’s time spent working on union activities during work hours,” said Drew Friedman, who covers federal workforce issues for Federal 小萝莉影视 Network.

Friedman added that during his first term in office, Trump signed a number of executive orders, which limited the ability of unions, “to negotiate some of the articles of those contracts.”

The biggest concern for many federal workers is Schedule F 鈥 an executive order signed by Trump just before the 2020 election. When President Joe Biden took office in January, he revoked the order.

That order would allow agencies within the federal government to reclassify workers, removing many job protections that federal workers have had for a long time.

“Once they were reclassified as ‘Schedule F,’ they would have their civil service protections removed. They would be made ‘at-will,’ and they would be easier for agencies to fire for any reason,” Friedman said.

With a new Trump administration taking office in January, unions are worried about the reappearance of a policy similar to Schedule F, .

“This is something that, on the campaign trail, he did promise to revive in a second term. So there is a strong possibility for it to come back and for it to come back much sooner than later,” Friedman said.

That’s on top of union worries about losing some听bargaining tools in contract negotiations with the new administration.
