Hundreds of clerical, technical and academic staffers plan to strike next week if a deal over wages and health care benefits isn’t reached.

The university and a union representing the workers have been working on an agreement for more than a year, reports.

Salary increases and pay equity are the main sticking points, with staffers wanting raises totaling 9% over two years. The union also wants to ensure no full-time staffer makes less than $40,000.

Without a contract in place, staffers plan to walk the picket lines for up to five days starting Monday, the day students will move onto campus.

Home schooling your kids? And experts say adding personal finance to the curriculum is a great idea.

They have some suggestions on how to get going, too: Have your kids start a business. For instance, help them make jewelry or slime and then, together, set up an online site to sell their goods.

some kids may even enjoy learning how to do stock trading 鈥 the .

And, of course, there’s always paying them an allowance in exchange for doing chores. Not surprisingly, most of the chores involve helping clean the house that they鈥檙e stuck in.

The allowance and money app says a lot of kids are spending their allowance in lockdown on video games 鈥 like Minecraft, Fortnite and Lego. But an impressive 39% of allowances are being saved.

According to a RoosterMoney survey, some of the most popular chores right now include those they can do around the house 鈥 like making their beds and cleaning their rooms, feeding and walking the family dog, taking out trash and recycling and doing the laundry.

If you give kids the chance to think up their own way to make extra money, you might be surprised.

Then, have the discussion about how much that job is worth, said Tim Sheehan, the CEO of , which provide debit cards and savings accounts for kids.

He says kids quickly learn that money doesn鈥檛 grow on trees 鈥 you have to earn it.

There are a couple of places for parents to find personal finance tools for kids. One is at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau鈥檚 website under the section called 鈥.鈥

Another is the . There are free videos on money, taxes and even options, swaps and futures.

Research says that and that the best facilitators are parents. Engaging in personal finance practices seems like a perfect match.

Two D.C.-area residents have launched a charitable organization dedicated to cleaning up local waterways amid stay-at-home orders during the coronavirus pandemic.

Up first for : cleaning up Hunting Creek.

Caleb Merendino and Ben Swanson, the pair behind the group, said they’ve pulled 110 bags of garbage out of the creek over the past six days and will need another 100 bags to finish the cleanup.

They decided to trace where the trash was coming from, and they said their search led them to the Alexandria Recycling Center off Eisenhower Avenue.

Once inside, the duo . In it, a tractor is seen moving around mulch in an area next to recycling bins. There’s trash in between the rows of bins. Conditions are the same for the area between the last row of bins and a fence that surrounds the property.

The camera closes in on holes in the fence and areas where the trash appears to wash out under the fence and down a hill that leads right into the waterway and, eventually, into the Potomac River.

Merendino and Swanson said they have notified the city of Alexandria about the trash problem.

City of Alexandria spokesman Craig T. Fifer disputed the claim that the Eisenhower Avenue drop-off facility was the source of the trash in Hunting Creek.

In an email, Fifer said the city has seen an increase in trash and recycling since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with residents shopping from home more often. He said with curbside collection limited to the contents in city-provided bins and the suspension of bulk, metal and yard waste collections, “our drop-off facilities have also had large increases in volume.”

With cardboard shipping boxes and food takeout containers filling bins faster, Fifer said, “we are seeing a significant increase in illegal dumping at our recycling drop-off centers” with nonrecyclables and other items, even while the centers are closed, contributing to more litter on the nearby pavement.

He directly addressed the video Merendino and Swanson shot and posted on YouTube, saying that the litter shown in it had not been there long and had already been cleaned up. With added resources at the drop-off facilities, Fifer said cleaning happens at least five days per week.

He added, “We inspected the damage to the fence promptly, and repairs have already been made. We have also inspected the area around the fence, and we are confident that the facility is not a major source of pollution in waterways.”

Fifer also said, “Hunting Creek receives water (and debris in the water) from the entire Potomac River watershed, so trash found in the Potomac River and Hunting Creek is generally from upstream of Alexandria.”

The cleanup appears to be the first effort for Merendino and Swanson at Advocates for Clean and Clear Waterways. They launched their effort in the last month.

They plan to lead more pollution cleanup efforts in local communities, they say on their website.

More information, along with video and pictures, can be found on the group’sor .

Column: Florida’s Panama City still recovering 6 months after Hurricane Michael /national/2019/04/column-floridas-panama-city-still-recovering-6-months-after-hurricane-michael/ /national/2019/04/column-floridas-panama-city-still-recovering-6-months-after-hurricane-michael/#respond Fri, 12 Apr 2019 08:21:10 +0000 /?p=19532058

It has been six months since Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle as a powerful Category 4 storm, and the recovery is anything but robust.

I spent some time in Panama City recently, visiting my brother, John Paul, and his family, who lived to tell the horrors of the massive storm.

Their beautiful home was mostly spared, but even after the roof and siding were replaced, uprooted trees removed and fences mended, they’re still painting over ceiling stains from the leaking roof and trying to find the source of a moldy smell. They got off easy.

But, generally, Panama City was devastated. Nothing was spared 鈥 hundreds of houses, entire apartment complexes, blocks and blocks of strip mall stores, nursing homes and 75% of the city’s tree canopy are gone. Just gone.

Also, 25% of the population has relocated and the city is suffering from a lack of workers.

Mayor Greg Brudnicki tells me that his city is still “in the critical care unit” six months after Hurricane Michael hit because it has been unable to get the federal government to grant money under the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program.

Brudnicki is asking U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson to “get the money flowing.”

“We’ve had Vice President (Mike) Pence here 鈥 We’ve had (U.S. Secretary of Education) Betsy DeVos here. We just need to get that particular set of funding going so we have the housing situation fixed 鈥 so we can bring back our workforce population that we desperately need. And that falls on Ben Carson,”聽Brudnicki said.

He added that he believes Panama City has been forgotten because it’s a small city, unlike Houston and New Orleans.

In a statement, HUD said it has not yet allocated the $1.68 billion it has been appropriated to help communities nationwide recover from 2018 disasters. But, it’s in the process of doing so. There’s no clear timetable for the money to “get flowing.”

One afternoon, we set out for the short drive to Mexico Beach to get a firsthand look at the recovery there. John Paul told me to “be prepared to be heartbroken.”

He wasn’t kidding. On the drive, long stretches of road that had once been lined with tall pine trees are now lined with fields of trees that have been eerily snapped in half in exactly the same place, bent over in the same direction.

We passed Tyndall Air Force Base on the way 鈥 it was hit hard; its airplane hangars are still shells with the roofs torn off. The housing units are still all topped with blue tarp. Just this week, the that Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson announced Tyndall recovery efforts would have to stop on May 1 if Congress fails to pass nearly $5 billion in supplemental funding bills.

As for Mexico Beach, where Michael came onshore as the third most intense Atlantic hurricane in history, there are empty concrete slabs as far as the eye can see and, occasionally, a half-shorn foundation with personal belongings still swaying in the ocean breeze. I could count on one hand the number of habitable houses.

There were very few people; construction workers mostly. The white “sugar sand” of the beaches was piled up in places so far from the beach that it was hard to imagine how much water had to travel inland to carry the sand that far.

So much debris remains entangled in the brushes 鈥 one could imagine it will take years and years to truly clean up the mess. The photos tell the truly heartbreaking story.

As for me, I felt an overwhelming desire to jump out of the car and pull some of the debris out of a canal. I wanted to drag broken trees into a pile for pick up. I wished I had the power to pull down the remnants of a sideways-facing home. It’s a helpless feeling. I’m just a visitor, so I just can’t imagine feeling that helpless everyday as the people who live there feel.

But, the people who live in Panama City 鈥 and those who will return someday to Mexico Beach 鈥 remain hopeful. Those with intact homes are still hosting friends and families in their spare bedrooms and on living room sofas. They still gather on the weekends to help take down leaning trees and fix broken fences.

And, they’re still asking for help. Here are a few ways you can pitch in:

  • : Look for the yellow PayPal button mid-page. This is a nonprofit organization that uses the funds for hurricane recovery.
  • : Contributions will buy trees from Florida nurseries to restore Panama City’s parks and green spaces.

小萝莉影视’s Joan Jones reported from Panama City, Florida.

How to gauge your fitness age /news/2013/11/how-to-gauge-your-fitness-age/ /news/2013/11/how-to-gauge-your-fitness-age/#respond Thu, 07 Nov 2013 01:16:03 +0000 http://wtop.com/uncategorized/2014/11/how-to-gauge-your-fitness-age/ WASHINGTON – So, how old are you? There’s your calendar age and then there’s your fitness age.

Your fitness age is a measurement of how well your body functions, given your age. And researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology say it’s a pretty good predictor of your future health.

They say, for instance, that a 50-year-old man who exercises with little intensity a few times a week and has a 36-inch waist and resting heart rate of 75 has a fitness age of 59.

The researchers use five measurements: your waist circumference, resting heart rate, how often and how hard you exercise and your age and sex. They plug those factors into a calculator and come up with your fitness age. They say it’s a good way to determine your current and future health.

By exercising more often and more intensely, you’ll reduce your waistline, which helps chip years off your fitness age, according to the researchers.

Check out the calculator for yourself at ntnu.edu.
