Instead of facing the freezing temperatures, marching bands, dance troops and other clubs performed inside the Entertainment & Sports Arena. Those performing lined up outside and marched a short distance through Southeast D.C. before entering the arena on Oak Dr in Congress Heights.

The move inside seemed to be a hit with those performing in the parade. Webster Phillips with the believes the parade should be permanently moved inside.

鈥淭his is the best. It’s warmer, it accommodates a lot more and we perform better,鈥 Phillips said.

He also said another benefit of the setup came after his team finished 鈥 instead of heading home, members could sit down and watch the other performances.

During the parade, Mayor Muriel Bowser was on stage chair dancing as the marching bands played for and paraded past the crowd. She told 小萝莉影视 that she actually enjoyed the move inside.

“You can see all the participants… We like to go through the community, but I think we are getting to see a lot today, as well,鈥 Bowser said.

Warming up before the parade, a drum major from Phelps High School in Northeast said it meant a lot that he and his friends were able to perform in the parade together.

鈥淚鈥檓 forever blessed to be a part of this parade,鈥 the 11th grader told 小萝莉影视

The event drew people of all ages, including Emma Ward, the Miss Senior DC who attended the original March on Washington in 1963. Ward was only two years out of high school when saw Dr. Martin Luther King Jr deliver his historic 鈥淚 Have a Dream” speech in person.

Since then, Ward has been to every MLK parade in the District and says it鈥檚 like reliving history.

鈥淚t means the present, the past and the future,鈥 said Ward. 鈥淚t encompasses all of it for me.鈥

Slipping up, 2 suspects charged with stealing used cooking oil in Silver Spring /montgomery-county/2024/12/slipping-up-2-suspects-charged-with-stealing-used-cooking-oil-in-silver-spring/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 19:24:43 +0000 /?p=26794370 Two suspects were arrested this week after police said they were trying to steal large amounts of used cooking oil from restaurants in Silver Spring, Maryland.

In a , Montgomery County police said 24-year-old Michael Cordones-Lopez and 61-year-old Patricio Cardones-Molina were apprehended Tuesday after officers observed them breaking into two locked grease dumpsters belonging to the Fillmore Silver Spring and Amina Thai restaurant.

Used cooking grease, which can go for upward of $2.38 per gallon, is used in the making of biodiesel fuel and other products. It’s often sold by restaurants as an extra source of revenue.

According to police, the suspects were first observed by officers around 2:20 a.m. driving a gray Ford E-350 on Mayor Lane, which is an alley behind several restaurants. Police said the officers saw the suspects getting out of the van, inspecting several grease dumpsters, then driving away.

Officers followed the suspects to the alley behind Fillmore Silver Spring at 8600 Colesville Rd., where suspects exited the vehicle, used a pry bar to break into a locked grease dumpster, and employed a generator-powered siphon to transfer cooking grease into large tanks inside of the van, according to police.

After the suspects finished at the Fillmore, police said they moved up the alley, repeating the process at a grease dumpster behind Amina Thai. They were arrested and taken into custody as they attempted to exit the alley.

Cordones-Lopez and Cardones-Molina have both been charged with fourth-degree burglary and three counts of theft under $100. They were later released on unsecured personal bonds.

‘Fill the Boat’ hopes to collect toys for children victims of Hurricane Helene /montgomery-county/2024/12/fill-the-boat-hopes-to-collect-toys-for-children-victims-of-hurricane-helene/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 09:00:12 +0000 /?p=26730296 Moving full steam ahead.

A local nonprofit and emergency responders from Montgomery County, Maryland, are teaming up this Saturday to collect toys for children in North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene.

meant to collect and distribute toys to children through various charities in the D.C. area. This year, because of the ongoing plight of those affected by Hurricane Helene, the focus shifted to aiding the community of Ashe County, North Carolina.

“This year, the list that we received from the folks down in Ashe County, they have over 550 kids that are in need,” said Costa Sardelis, logistics coordinator for , the nonprofit that runs the event.

In partnership with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue and Montgomery County Police, the “Fill the Boat” toy drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Rio Lakefront at 9811 Washingtonian Blvd. in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Aside from the toy drive itself, Sardelis said the event should be a fun day for children of all ages, including the opportunity to interact with a fire truck, as well as a search and rescue boat.

“Montgomery County Fire and Montgomery County Police are going to be bringing out some of their cool apparatus for kids to check out. We’ll have our search and rescue boat. We’ll have our response trailer there,” Sardelis said. “So it’s going to be a family-friendly event.”

Sardelis said in previous years, the record for toys collected in a single drive was 412. He’s hoping they can break that record this year: “My goal for this year is to get exactly 550, or more.”

After the event on Saturday, volunteers will drive the toys down to Ashe County, where they will be distributed by partner charities there.

“We’re going to help them bundle up the toys into Santa bags for the kids, and then we’ll head back to Maryland on Sunday night,” Sardelis said.

If you are interested in donating to this event, Sardelis said they are looking for “new and unwrapped toys for children ages five to 16, for both boys and girls. So everything from LEGOS and Hot Wheels cars, to Barbie dolls, coloring books.”

“And again, the key is new and unwrapped, so that we can sort them easily and get them into the Santa bags when we’re down to North Carolina,” he said.

Thousands across DC under boil water advisory /dc/2024/12/thousands-across-northeast-dc-under-boil-water-advisory/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 00:41:35 +0000 /?p=26728871 Thousands of residents in D.C. are under a due to a drop in pressure that could affect water safety.

Affected areas include: River Terrace, Mayfair, Eastland Gardens, Kenilworth, Deanwood, Central Northeast, and Anacostia Park, according to D.C. Water.

The water provider said Tuesday evening it has rerouted water and is slowly increasing the pressure to homes, but the boil water advisory remains in effect pending additional testing. Workers have also isolated a water main they believe is the primary source of the leak and will continue working overnight to make repairs, according to D.C. Water.

Other areas of D.C. not listed above have also received the advisory via public safety text. If you receive the warning, consider it applicable to your area.

On Tuesday morning, D.C. Water began receiving calls from affected areas reporting low, or no water pressure. Pressure loss can cause contaminants to enter the water system, including bacteria, viruses, parasites and other risks.

D.C. Water said “the advisory will be lifted when tests on two consecutive days show no bacteria are present,” which they say will be “Thursday, Dec. 5 at the earliest.”

D.C. Water says customers in the impacted areas should:

  • Discard any beverages and ice made after midnight on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024.
  • Run cold water until clear (if discolored) prior to boiling.
  • Run cold water for 2 minutes if known sources of lead are present prior to boiling.
  • Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute and let it cool.
  • Store cooled water in a clean, covered container.

Boiled and bottled water can be used for brushing teeth, preparing food and drinking.

Water customers with questions are advised to call D.C. Water Customer Service at 202-354-3600 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or the 24-Hour Command Center at 202-612-3400.

Kamala, beloved Asian elephant at National Zoo, euthanized after failing health /dc/2024/11/kamala-beloved-asian-elephant-at-national-zoo-euthanized-after-failing-health/ Sun, 03 Nov 2024 12:11:25 +0000 /?p=26608062 Kamala, a longtime member of the Smithsonian鈥檚 National Zoo’s Asian elephant herd, was euthanized Saturday in D.C. following years of struggling with osteoarthritis.

Even while measures were taken over the last several years to preserve Kamala’s health and quality of life, her physical condition had irreversibly declined, the Smithsonian said in a .

“Given Kamala’s declining quality of life and poor long-term prognosis, animal care staff made the decision to humanely euthanize her,” the zoo said in a statement.

Kamala, who was born in the wild, was estimated to be about 50 years old.

After she was put to sleep, the zoo said other members of the elephant herd, Maharani, Swarna, Spike, Bozie, Trong NHI and NHI Linh, were given an opportunity “to spend some time with their deceased herd mate.”

According to the zoo, Kamala was born in Sri Lanka around 1975 and first lived at an elephant orphanage in Pinnawalla, before being moved with her longtime herd mate, Swarna, to the Calgary Zoo in Alberta, Canada. Kamala gave birth to two offspring while in Canada.

Kamala, her daughter Maharani, and Swarna were all transferred to the National Zoo in D.C. in 2014. It was around then animal care staff at the zoo began noticing and treating the symptoms that would eventually develop into severe osteoarthritis.

Her longtime elephant companions, Maharani and Swarna, were the last to visit with Kamala after her passing Saturday afternoon.

“Swarna and Maharani were the last to visit. Maharani spent quite a long time investigating the body, blowing into her mouth and trunk and nudging Kamala鈥檚 head,” according to the zoo.

Antisemitic phrases found spray-painted at Bethesda school, police say /local/2024/08/antisemitic-phrases-found-spray-painted-at-bethesda-school-police-say/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 10:34:18 +0000 /?p=26322701 Graffiti, including “antisemitic phrases,” was found spray-painted at a Montgomery County, Maryland, elementary school and a nearby building Sunday morning, police said.

Montgomery County police said officers were called to Bethesda Elementary School at 7600 Arlington Road around 7:14 a.m. for a report of vandalism that happened “during the overnight hours.” It said similar graffiti was also found at a nearby building at 4900 Del Ray Avenue.

Neighbors and Jewish community members wasted no time in responding.

Montgomery County Council President聽Andrew Friedson told 小萝莉影视 he saw “disturbing photos” of the graffiti left outside of the school. The school is also the site for a weekly farmer’s market he often attends on Sunday mornings.

Friedson said he immediately notified the police and Montgomery County Public Schools, as well as Bethesda Urban Partnership, who began leading the cleanup efforts early.

“I will say, there were a large number of residents, including children, who were helping and supporting the efforts from the Bethesda Urban Partnership team and others who are cleaning the graffiti,” he added.

The police department’s second district commander posted about the incident on social media.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich lambasted the vandalism and implored anyone with information to come forward.

“I was disgusted by the hate-filled vandalism that we saw in Bethesda yesterday. While individuals may have strong opinions and feelings about events in the Middle East, hate speech and vandalism are not acceptable outlets for any type of political concerns or comments,” Elrich said in a statement, adding, “I encourage anyone with information about the perpetrators to contact the Police Department at the non-emergency number at 301-279-8000. Hate has no place in Montgomery County.”

Montgomery County has seen a number of antisemitic and other forms of hate speech in recent years, including high-profile incidents at Magruder High School and Westbrook Elementary School, both in Bethesda.

“As we are only two weeks away from the start of the school year, it is imperative that we recognize the emotional harm actions like this have on everyone. I understand that this incident may have caused fear or concern, and I ask us all to have the necessary discussions to bring us together, to foster unity rather than division,” said Bethesda Elementary School Principal Lisa Seymour in a statement.

This action is not only offensive but is divisive and goes against our school district and community values in every sense. Our schools must remain a safe place for all students, families, and staff,” she said.

Police said they have “no suspect descriptions” at this time and they are actively investigating the incident.

In addition to police and the school system, Friedson said the Anti-Defamation League of Greater Washington and Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) were also involved in the response.

鈥淚t is appalling that so many families simply trying to enjoy the Bethesda Central Farm Market instead had to be subject to 鈥 and then voluntarily step in to help clean 鈥 hateful and antisemitic messages accusing Israel of raping women and children,” Guila Franklin Siegel, chief operating officer of the JCRC, said of the graffiti.

“Unfortunately, these messages 鈥 like the recent arson attack on the Jewish Museum in Baltimore 鈥 are a stark reminder that antisemitism as an ideology is still pervasive and not so easily erased,” she added. “We hope the perpetrators of this outrageous desecration of school property are apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Community spends hours searching for Hassan

Family, friends and concerned citizens await updates after 6-year-old Fawzan Hassan goes missing during a picnic at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg on July 28, 2024.

After more than 24 hours searching the area, police asked the community during a 3:30 p.m. news conference on Sunday for help in finding Hassan.

Hassan had last been seen wearing blue and white sneakers.

Among other requests, police asked residents keep an eye out for Hassan in public areas, as well as checking their backyards and other places he may have sought shelter around their properties.

Ousman Seid, a leader with the Ethiopian Silt’e community group hosting the picnic, said the group had been helping in the search for the child and had offered their own $10,000 reward.

“This was our event. We think we are responsible, and we didn’t have any sleep,” Seid said. “We felt we have to do this, and the money really didn’t matter.”

Search teams worked overnight Saturday into Sunday searching for Hassan, using drones with the assistance of Maryland National Capital Police in Montgomery County, as well as canines from the Mid-Atlantic DOGS search and rescue teams.

Before the end of the evening news conference, Hedgepeth addressed the parents in the community, many of whom had been a part of the search.

“As a parent myself, your head’s got to be on a swivel. You have to constantly be watching. And it’s even harder when you have a child with special needs,” said Hedgepeth. “Keep watching those children, keep your eyes and focus on them as much as you can. But unfortunately, you know things like this do happen. Tragedies do happen.”
