Trump wants his name on new Washington Commanders stadium in DC /washington-commanders/2025/11/trump-wants-his-name-on-new-washington-commanders-stadium-in-dc/ Sat, 08 Nov 2025 18:13:35 +0000 /?p=28565487 With efforts underway to build an updated Washington Commanders football stadium at the old RFK Stadium site in D.C., President Donald Trump allegedly wants the new facility named after himself, according to an that broke Saturday.

Trump administration officials and a member of the Commanders’ ownership group have been engaged in backchannel discussions on the matter, a senior White House source told ESPN.

“That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote in a statement to ESPN.

The sports outlet says she declined to answer additional questions, but added, “It’s what the president wants, and it will probably happen.”

A Commanders spokesperson declined to comment. The office of the city鈥檚 mayor, Muriel Bowser, declined comment, according to The Associated Press.

Trump is scheduled to attend the Commanders’ home game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday; a team source told ESPN that while stakeholders expect to have conversations with Trump about the stadium name at the game, no formal discussions have taken place so far.

The Commanders do own the new stadium’s naming rights, presumably to be sold to a corporate sponsor. The final call will likely be made by the D.C. Council, which will lease the stadium to the Commanders, and the National Park Service, which manages the land on which the facility will be built.

Former President Joe Biden signed a bill in January that transferred the land that had the old stadium from control of the federal government to the District.

The new stadium was first teased in April by Bowser and Commanders owner Josh Harris. Back in July, Trump said he would block the construction of the stadium if Harris did not change the team name from Commanders back to its former Redskins moniker. Regardless, in September, the stadium was officially approved with an 11-2 council vote. It’s slated to be finished in 2030.

White House to reopen for public tours with ‘updated route’ next month /white-house/2025/11/white-house-to-reopen-for-public-tours-with-updated-route-next-month/ Sun, 02 Nov 2025 21:01:52 +0000 /?p=28519655 The White House says it will resume public tours starting on Dec. 2.

Tours of the People’s House paused “indefinitely” in August, in preparation for the construction of President Donald Trump’s new ballroom.

The East Wing, which was demolished last month as part of the construction process, has historically been the spot where visitors enter the building for public tours.

In light of the renovation works, the upcoming tours will now lead visitors through “an updated route,” according to a news release.

All December tours will spotlight first lady Melania Trump’s Christmas decorations on the State Floor, per the release.

Congressional offices may once again submit constituent tour requests on Monday.

Tour availabilities for December will open 30 days ahead of each potential tour date, while tour availabilities for January 2026 should be made available to congressional offices at some point next month.

Washington Spirit’s Trinity Rodman will take indefinite leave of absence to treat back injury /washington-spirit/2025/04/washington-spirits-trinity-rodman-will-take-indefinite-leave-of-absence-to-treat-back-injury/ Sat, 19 Apr 2025 23:58:05 +0000 /?p=27279482 Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman will take time off indefinitely from soccer to focus on healing a back injury.

“Trinity is taking time away from team activities to manage her back,” a Spirit spokesperson told 小萝莉影视 on Saturday. “We look forward to her returning when she’s healthy.”

Rodman, 22, was listed as “out” on Washington’s availability report for Saturday’s match against the Orlando Pride, which the Spirit won 1-0. She is scheduled to receive treatment in London.

The Washington Post first reported .

Following Saturday’s match, Washington head coach Jonatan Gir谩ldez said he couldn’t comment on Rodman’s injury as his focus in the last few days has been entirely on planning for the Orlando match.

“In the next days, I will have information I will be able to share,” Gir谩ldez said.

Rodman has been battling a back injury since the end of the 2024 season, causing her to miss much of Washington鈥檚 preseason and the Challenge Cup on March 7. She made her first appearance of the year on March 14 during the Spirit’s 2-1 win over Houston.

She’s played four games this season for Washington, totaling 165 minutes, and made one start.

Earlier this month, she returned to play for the U.S. women’s national team after an eight-month absence, scoring a goal in the United States’ 2-0 win against Brazil in a friendly rematch of the Paris Olympics gold-medal match.

Rodman addressed her injury following Washington’s match against Bay FC in late March, stating the problem is not one specific thing but how her back is structured.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think my back will ever be the way it was my rookie year, which is unfortunate,鈥 Rodman told reporters.

‘Our rule of law means nothing’: Protestors in DC demand return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia /dc/2025/04/our-rule-of-law-means-nothing-protestors-in-dc-demand-return-of-kilmar-abrego-garcia/ Sat, 19 Apr 2025 23:20:53 +0000 /?p=27279937 Thousands of protesters marched from the Washington Monument to the White House in D.C. on Saturday, rallying in support of Kilmar Abrego Garcia 鈥 the Maryland resident who was mistakenly deported by President Donald Trump’s administration last month.

This video is no longer available.

Abrego Garcia, who U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials conceded was removed from the country due to an “administrative error” in a March 31 court filing, had been residing in the United States under protected status since 2019 after a judge concluded he would likely be targeted by Salvadoran gangs if sent back. Abrego Garcia, a father of three, was living in Beltsville with his wife, Jennifer 鈥 an American citizen 鈥 at the time of his deportation.

Last week, the Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to work to bring Abrego Garcia back to the U.S. but Attorney General Pam Bondi said Wednesday that he 鈥渋s not coming back to our country.鈥

“If the Supreme Court can be defied, then our democracy has died,” said Mike, a local resident who joined the rally.

Administration officials and congressional Republicans argue that Abrego Garcia is affiliated with the MS-13 gang; however, he has not been charged with any gang-related crimes.

Andy Zee, who organized Saturday’s march, says he believes Abrego Garcia was deported “on the basis of having tattoos.”

The constitutional principles at the heart of Abrego Garcia’s case were top of mind for many protesters.

“I’ve seen what happens when a fascist regime takes over and I do not want to see that happen here,” said Nejla Solano of Baltimore, an Iranian-American who donned a burning Lady Liberty costume at the protest.

She expressed concern about her own legal status, given her participation in the march: “I am not going to shut up. I’m going to use my free speech. Apparently, that’s a problem with this administration.”

The rally drew Americans who haven’t taken to the streets in decades.

“I haven’t protested since Vietnam, but I’m out here protesting now,” said Mary, a Baltimore resident. “Our rule of law means nothing. We can be snatched off the street in a minute, and who would know?”

‘All he needed was a villain’: Transgender pilot sues right-wing influencer who wrongly blamed her for deadly DC midair crash /local/2025/04/transgender-pilot-sues-right-wing-influencer-for-defamation-over-false-claims-related-to-dc-plane-crash/ Sat, 12 Apr 2025 20:06:18 +0000 /?p=27248284
小萝莉影视's Matt Small reports on a defamation lawsuit that has been filed against a right-wing influencer over false claims he made related to the deadly midair crash near Reagan National Airport earlier this year.

A transgender pilot is suing a popular right-wing influencer after he falsely connected her to the midair collision that killed 67 people near Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, in January.

Jo Ellis, a helicopter pilot with the Virginia Army National Guard, filed the defamation lawsuit against social media personality Matt Wallace in a Colorado federal court on Wednesday.

Her attorneys argue that Wallace 鈥 who made a series of online posts incorrectly identifying Ellis as the pilot of the U.S. Army Black Hawk chopper involved in the Jan. 29 crash, and suggested the tragedy was a “trans terror attack” 鈥 intentionally made the false claims to financially profit off an anti-transgender narrative.

Shortly after the American Airlines jet and Black Hawk helicopter crashed over the Potomac River, Wallace posted on his X account 鈥 where he has more than 2 million followers 鈥 that he’d learned the Black Hawk pilot was “a transgender,” according to Ellis’ complaint. That post also contained a photo of Ellis.

Wallace deleted this initial post after it went viral, the lawsuit continues, but went on to publish more false information targeting Ellis 鈥 including another X post containing her photos, in which he also said聽a transgender Black Hawk pilot 鈥渨rote a long letter about 鈥楪ender Dysphoria鈥 and
depression鈥 the day before the collision.

Wallace’s post also alleged Ellis might have been involved in 鈥渁nother trans terror attack.鈥

The lawsuit goes on to state that about two hours after this post, which garnered 4.8 million views on X, Wallace posted yet another photo of Ellis, captioned, “JUST IN: The
transgender Helicopter pilot who allegedly crashed into the plane was in the process of
converting to Judaism.鈥

In her complaint, Ellis’ attorneys say Wallace was motivated by a desire to generate “clicks and money” in the crash’s aftermath, and “all he needed was a villain” to blame. Because he “knew an anti-transgender narrative would draw significant attention,” the complaint alleges, he settled on Ellis as a target.

When Ellis found out that Wallace was making these posts, she posted a “proof of life” video to her personal Facebook page. In his reaction to this video, Wallace said in a post that the idea Ellis had been flying the helicopter “‘seemed credible’ because Plaintiff ‘wrote an article calling out Trump鈥檚 trans military ban only a few days ago,'” according to the complaint.

“The damage caused to Plaintiff by Defendant was instantaneous and immense,” Ellis’ attorneys argue. “Prior to Defendant’s campaign, Plaintiff was a private citizen who led a private life away from social media and the limelight.”

That all changed on Jan. 31, according to the lawsuit.

“She discovered she was the second most-trending topic in the United States on X with more than 90,000 posts mentioning her name or her likeness,” Ellis’ lawyers said of their client, who was “forced into the public sphere and can no longer remain a private citizen due to [Wallace’s] lies.”

The shooting took place in June 2023, when Compassion and Serenity, a funeral home owned by 50-year-old Wilson Wesley Chavis, was providing a burial service for 10-year-old Arianna Davis at Suitland’s Washington National Cemetery.

Davis had been killed a month prior when she was caught in the crossfire of a shooting on Mother’s Day.

Chavis, who was at the cemetery that day, confronted two attendees shortly before Davis’ service began 鈥 these people, who knew Davis’ family, worked for another funeral home with which Chavis had a “long-standing business dispute,” according to police.

One of the people Chavis confronted was the pastor leading Davis’ service, according to charging documents. Mourners were getting ready to gather around the gravesite when Chavis pushed the pastor and said, 鈥淭his ain鈥檛 your f 鈥 funeral home,鈥 per charging documents.

Funeral attendees confronted Chavis about this behavior, according to police, and that’s when Chavis pulled out a gun and fired. One of the bullets fatally struck 30-year-old Ronald Banks, one of Davis’ pallbearers.

Chavis later fired another bullet that struck a woman. The shot resulted in a graze wound.

鈥淲hen acts of violence occur at places that should be sacred like funeral homes and cemeteries, it’s horrific,” said State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy in the release. “With this guilty verdict, Mr. Chavis will be held accountable for his reckless, callous actions.”

Chavis faces up to 65 years in prison. In addition to murder, he was convicted of reckless endangerment and the use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime.

His sentencing is scheduled for July 11.

How a drop in temperature is expected to impact DC-area road conditions for the Monday morning commute /weather-news/2025/01/heres-how-dc-area-roads-looked-this-morning-and-what-you-can-expect-overnight/ Mon, 13 Jan 2025 03:42:34 +0000 /?p=26869785 A sunny Sunday turned into a cold evening, with the possibility for a refreeze that could make the Monday morning commute icy. Here’s what you need to know for the start of the work week.

The sunny skies that graced the D.C. region Sunday are giving way to a slippery kick off to the Monday work grind as melted snow and ice once again freezes up. Overnight temperatures are forecasted to get only as high as the mid-20s.

7小萝莉影视 First Alert Meteorologist Mark Pe帽a told 小萝莉影视 that anyone out on the roads or sidewalks on Monday must be cautious and be on the alert for any slick spots. As the day progresses, however, temperatures will get into the low 40s.

But, enjoy the warmer weather while it lasts, Pe帽a said, because this is just a momentary reprieve.聽The trend of cold temperatures will continue into the middle of the week.

Come Tuesday, a dry cold front is forecasted to blow into town. It’ll bring the temperature back down to the mid-20s and even potentially create the right conditions for some flurries.

“Bitter cold and winds are in the forecast Wednesday. Highs will barely get out of the 20s, under mostly sunny skies,” 7小萝莉影视 First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans said.

Both Fauquier and Culpeper county public schools have announced two-hour delays for Virginia students.

Poor road conditions were par for the course after Monday’s storm dropped up to 10 inches of snow in parts of the D.C. area. A couple more inches followed on Saturday morning, and 小萝莉影视’s Luke Lukert drove around some local streets to check out the conditions.

Lukert didn’t notice much accumulation along major roadways 鈥 just some slush around medians and sidewalks.

That鈥檚 because the roads are so salty from Monday鈥檚 storms, nothing had a chance to stick,” he said.

Saturday’s above-freezing temperatures likely explain why road treatments were so effective, according to Evans. Roads “were mostly wet thanks to temperatures only slightly below freezing, which allowed treatment and ice melt to work well,” he said.

Lukert noted that driving on some major roadways felt like cruising on gravel, thanks to the heavy salt treatments. While those main roads are taken care of, some neighborhood streets have much more snow on them.

“The most treacherous part of your commute is likely right outside your front door,” Lukert said.聽

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the D.C. area in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Between 5 and 9 inches of accumulation are expected, with up to a foot in certain areas.

“Clouds are streaming in and snow begins anytime after 11 p.m.,” said 7小萝莉影视 First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans. “Temperatures will be into the 20s at night with heavy snow at times and at least a few inches on the ground by the time you wake up tomorrow morning.”

Snowfall is predicted to continue for most of Monday, especially along and south of the Interstate 66 corridor.

“Expect a break in the snowfall around lunchtime and into the early afternoon on Monday,” Evans said. “Another round of some light snow Monday evening,” he said.

Some of that snow may mix with sleet and freezing rain into Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Evans said the snow is expected to end around 9 p.m. on Monday. He said overnight is expected to bring 3 to 5 inches with an additional total of 1 to 3 inches on Monday afternoon and evening.

said road conditions are expected to “rapidly deteriorate” Sunday night and into Monday with some roadways “becoming impassable” during morning and evening commutes.

“During times of heaviest snow, between midnight and mid-morning Monday, even primary and treated roads will be impassable,” the service said. “It is highly recommended to postpone non-essential travel.”

DC area prepares for snow storm

Temperatures “will barely get above freezing” Monday, according to 7小萝莉影视 First Alert Meteorologist Mark Pe帽a. And the area is not expected to get any warmer through the remainder of the week.

“Whatever falls, it’s likely to stick,” Pe帽a said.

Some area school districts and government have already started to announce closures, delays and other schedule modifications for Monday ahead of the storm. Keep an eye on 小萝莉影视’s Closings & Delays page for the latest announcements.

Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared a snow emergency for D.C. through at least the end of the day on Tuesday.

During the emergency, drivers parked on snow emergency routes may be towed. See a list of where those routes are . Cars should be moved by 9 p.m. on Sunday.聽

Travel conditions to be ‘hazardous’

鈥淚鈥檓 encouraging all Virginians, visitors, and travelers to stay alert, monitor the weather forecast, and prepare now for any potential impacts,鈥 Youngkin said.

According to the weather service, traveling by car “could be very difficult.”

鈥淩oads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous,鈥 the National Weather Service said.

If you absolutely have to drive, officials suggest bringing a winter storm kit packed with tire chains, booster cables, a flashlight, blankets 鈥渁nd anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.鈥

In Maryland, Gov. Wes Moore to take effect Sunday and last through at least Monday.

鈥淜eeping Marylanders safe is our top priority. Please stay off the roads during this storm. Prepare your home and family and charge your communications devices in case you lose power鈥 according to a press release聽from Moore鈥檚 office.

The move Sunday evening is a shift from the previously declared state of preparedness. His office says the state’s snow response will now “shift from preventative measures to emergency powers.”

“Immediate actions are being taken to safeguard Marylanders. Law enforcement agencies are increasing staffing, with support standing by as needed, while public health, human services and utilities agencies continuously prepare for possible impacts from the storm,” the office concluded.

Travelers should brace for potential delays and cancellations on airlines Monday, according to 7小萝莉影视 First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans.

The frigid week (and month) ahead

The “very cold weekend” is just an appetizer for even colder temperatures expected for the week ahead, according to 7小萝莉影视 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Veronica Johnson. Even this week’s highest predicted temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark.

The teeth-chattering temperatures won鈥檛 be going anywhere anytime soon, according to Johnson. She warned they would be sticking around through mid-January.

In D.C., for Sunday with the District opening up additional hypothermia overflow shelters for those who don’t have a warm place to stay.

The District said to contact the for any animal emergencies, including pets found left outside in the cold weather.

Planning some last-minute snow prep? 鈥楪et it now, before it sells out鈥

It鈥檚 no secret that many residents will spend today flocking to stores in search of equipment to help with snow removal.

Neil Boticelli works at Logan Hardware on 14th St NW in Washington D.C. He said they鈥檝e sold out of nearly all their snow shovels over the past 48-hours, but they expect to get more tomorrow.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had a lot of people coming in for a lot of ice melt, lots of shovels, sleds, too,鈥 Boticelli said. 鈥淧eople have been coming in for silicone to cover the bottom of their plastic sleds to really get those kids going.鈥

Daniel Monroy was there buying snowmelt. He said he went to buy some via Walmart delivery earlier today but they were sold out.

鈥淭hey seem to be pretty stocked up here though. Get it now, before it sells out,鈥 Monroy said.

‘More than just a toy drive’: Turnout flourishes for this year’s DC Army National Guard Toy Ruck /dc/2024/12/more-than-just-a-toy-drive-turnout-flourishes-for-this-years-dc-army-national-guard-toy-ruck/ Sun, 08 Dec 2024 11:48:40 +0000 /?p=26748086 Hundreds of Army National Guard and other volunteers marched through Saturday’s frigid winds to bring new toys to hospitalized children in D.C.

The event was, in the words of D.C. area National Guardsman Col. Jonathan Grabill, “a powerful reminder of the duty we all share to support those in our community who are struggling.鈥

D.C.’s second annual Army National Guard Toy Ruck led volunteers 鈥 including National Guard service members and civilians alike from across the District, Maryland and Virginia 鈥 on a five-mile trek from the D.C. Armory to Children’s National Hospital. Participants donned festive garb, and each carried a toy to be donated.

In a , Grabill called the Army National Guard Toy Ruck “more than just a toy drive.” He described the event as “an opportunity for National Guardsmen and the local community to come together to show those facing hardship 鈥 whether they can鈥檛 be home for the holidays, are enduring pain, or are in need 鈥 that we care.”

The Toy Ruck began two years ago with about 30 volunteers. This year, officials estimate that more than 450 people took part in the event. According to Maj. Gen. John C. Andonie, the interim commanding general of the D.C. National Guard, the growing interest is meaningful, not just for the community’s spirit, but for area children and their families who will spend the holidays at the hospital.

鈥淭he response has been huge 鈥 very positive,鈥 Andonie said in the news release. 鈥淭hey want us back every year. Even if it鈥檚 just for a morning, we hope to take their minds off their worries and bring them a little love and joy.鈥

The push for reaching out and collecting toys begins in October, according to Andonie, but Saturday’s turnout is encouraging the National Guard to “work harder to reach even more people” next year.
