Wet week continues Wednesday in DC area /weather-news/2025/05/wet-week-continues-wednesday-in-dc-area/ Wed, 14 May 2025 20:33:37 +0000 /?p=27388002 After a brief reprieve from wet and stormy weather Wednesday, the evening brings a renewed risk of flooding to a D.C. region that’s already been soaked for several days this week.

7小萝莉影视 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Veronica Johnson told 小萝莉影视 some scattered storms may resume in the afternoon and evening, with a chance of damaging winds and additional flooding.

“Already, your First Alert weather team, we’re going with a storm alert,” Johnson said. “And with the potential for some higher winds, we could see some downed trees. So again, gotta stay weather aware.”

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Potomac River at Little Falls, affecting the surrounding areas of Fairfax and Montgomery counties. The warning is in effect from late Wednesday night to late Friday evening. Another warning is in effect in other areas upstream along the Potomac.

The river was already rising Wednesday afternoon at White’s Ferry, and the former operator of the ferry said if the water level reaches 17 feet, the basement of White’s Ferry Store and Grill will flood.

Additionally, a flood watch is in effect for D.C.’s western suburbs until midnight.

Temperatures will continue to climb for the rest of the week, with highs around 80 Thursday and Friday 鈥 and storms are expected to continue through the end of the week.

“It’s not until Sunday, when a front comes in, we finally clear out the humidity and get a reset of the atmosphere,” 7小萝莉影视 First Alert Meteorologist Jordan Evans told 小萝莉影视.

The showers are providing some much-needed relief to persistent The rain first began Monday night.

“The smaller streams are starting to crest and drop off. We know Western Maryland got hit. But a lot of the smaller streams out there are starting to come back down, so that those smaller streams are probably seeing less of impact,” the weather service’s Jeremy Geiger said.

“Now, all that water is going into the Potomac, so now the Potomac is starting to rise, and it will be moving downstream toward D.C., probably late this evening, until tomorrow.”

Geiger said the immediate flooding impacts are probably more upstream along the Potomac River.

In Allegany County in northwestern Maryland, two elementary schools had to be evacuated due to flooding.

Jonathan Dayton, spokesman for Potomac Fire Company No. 2, told 小萝莉影视 the water level was over one foot high against the main entrance door at Westernport Elementary School.

“Definitely a very chaotic situation,” Dayton said. “You can see in pictures two, three, four 鈥 cars in the parking lot that were just floating, due to high waters.”

Author John Green 鈥 and his fans 鈥 want you to pay attention to tuberculosis /health-fitness/2025/05/author-john-green-and-his-fans-want-you-to-pay-attention-to-tuberculosis/ Sat, 03 May 2025 09:19:25 +0000 /?p=27310002 Outbreaks of measles in the D.C. region and across the U.S. have been making the news, but this April on Capitol Hill, activists called attention to the deadliest infectious disease in the world 鈥 tuberculosis.

Yes, tuberculosis is still around, and it’s , according to the World Health Organization.

Author and tuberculosis activist John Green said that’s more than malaria, typhoid and war, combined.

Tuberculosis is both preventable and curable, and active cases in the U.S. are relatively uncommon 鈥 though infection rates are climbing quickly, and are expected to keep rising.

So why do many people believe we got rid of tuberculosis already?

‘We got our prayers answered’

Many of the tuberculosis activists who met with their legislators for 鈥淭B Hill Day鈥 in early April also weren鈥檛 aware of how much havoc tuberculosis still wreaks around the world 鈥 including some of those who survived tuberculosis themselves.

Nicole Skaggs, a survivor and patient advocate, said that she has spent a lot of time explaining 鈥 and justifying 鈥 her illness to family, friends and co-workers.

鈥淚 remember having so many conversations, like, 鈥楳an, I wish somebody famous could get TB so that they could speak out, like we’ve seen other celebrities speak out for other diseases,’鈥 Skaggs said.

John Green didn’t have a tuberculosis diagnosis. But he answered that call anyway.

鈥淲e got our prayers answered,鈥 Skaggs said. 鈥淎nd then some.鈥

Green’s popularity surged in the 2010s with his hit young adult novels, such as “The Fault in our Stars.” He is also known for his educational “Crash Course” videos, which have become a mainstay in high schools and colleges across the country.

He鈥檚 been fundraising for for years 鈥 but his fascination with tuberculosis began in 2019 during a trip to Sierra Leone in Africa, when he was brought to a tuberculosis clinic and met Henry Reider.

鈥淚 was obsessed with tuberculosis,鈥 Green told 小萝莉影视.

There, Green and Reider’s friendship took off. The more he learned about tuberculosis, the more Green saw the gap in treatment quality between Sierra Leone and the U.S.

Reider couldn’t afford accurate testing and struggled through trial-and-error treatment that dragged on for so long that his lymph nodes swelled large enough to puncture the skin in his neck.

Green processed everything he was learning about tuberculosis the best way he knew how 鈥 by writing what would eventually become “Everything is Tuberculosis,” which was released in March.

He also started talking about it in his YouTube videos and on his podcast as 鈥渁n illness that walks the trails of injustice and inequity that we blazed for it,鈥 as he would later describe it in his book.

Many of his most dedicated fans noticed.

‘TB Fighters’

In addition to his books, Green is known for the large online community he and his brother Hank gained from their YouTube channel. His followers call themselves “Nerdfighters.”

When Green started talking about tuberculosis in his YouTube videos and on his podcast, he said he had no idea that people would respond so generously. They soon became a part of the work to raise awareness about tuberculosis.

In 2023, some of the most dedicated activists started organizing themselves and formed 鈥.鈥

Some of these 鈥溾 had very little experience with activism.

Organizer Hannah Kenny described the early TB Fighters as 鈥渁 lot of very confused but very excited people鈥 and 鈥渁 bunch of bees in a trench coat.鈥

Within a few months, hundreds of TB Fighters were attending regular phone banking sessions and writing to their representatives.

Three TB Fighters on their way to a protest against Danaher in April. (Courtesy TB Fighters)

‘We know how to live in a world without tuberculosis’

Green took things public in 2023, with videos calling out companies and for what he calls 鈥減rice gouging鈥 for tuberculosis testing and medication. Hundreds more Nerdfighters began calling and writing to their representatives.

Within days, Johnson & Johnson announced 鈥 allowing more affordable generic versions into the market.

Danaher agreed , but fell far short of what Doctors Without Borders has campaigned for.

The companies did not cite what prompted their moves.

Danaher did not respond to 小萝莉影视鈥檚 request for comment.

Tests and medications themselves aren鈥檛 the only barriers to treatment. In his book, Green explores how historical forces, such as colonialism, racism, war and other diseases have ravaged communities and health care systems in poor countries.

He also delves into how tuberculosis has been imagined 鈥 at times, stigmatized, and at other times, romanticized 鈥 and how those imaginings have influenced how we have collectively understood the disease.

He explores how all these historical forces have come together to shape the current state of affairs, and the way the wealthy world addresses tuberculosis today 鈥 namely, that it is failing to do so.

But he said that all of this is avoidable.

鈥淲e know how to live in a world without tuberculosis,鈥 Green writes. 鈥淏ut we choose not to live in that world.鈥

Tuberculosis is both preventable and curable 鈥 and it鈥檚 not nearly as difficult or expensive as one might think.

鈥淚f we were to spend $20 billion per year, by 2030 we could drive down mortality 90%,鈥 said Vincent Lin, associate director of health and policy at Partners in Health.

That amounts to about $130 per year per taxpayer, Lin said.

鈥淪o we’re not talking about some moonshot, very difficult thing to achieve,” Lin said. “This is very much within our grasp if we’re able to mobilize the resources to do so.鈥

‘A threat to people everywhere’

President Donald Trump’s cuts to the U.S. Agency for International Development and the National Institutes of Health have slashed the global funding supply for tuberculosis research and treatment in half, according to .

鈥淗undreds of thousands of people have their treatment interrupted,鈥 Green told 小萝莉影视, citing . 鈥淢ost of the people who’ve had their treatment interrupted will die of tuberculosis.鈥

In his book, Green encourages readers to empathize with the people whose lives and problems are physically far away from our own. But he also makes a domestic case for treating tuberculosis abroad.

鈥淒iseases respect no borders. The world is so interconnected,鈥 Lin said, pointing to COVID-19 as a recent example of how quickly a disease can spread. 鈥淪o we have to be able to deal with these infectious diseases, wherever they might be.鈥

Tuberculosis cases are rising quickly in the U.S., and Lin said those numbers will only climb if action isn’t taken both at home and abroad.

While tuberculosis treatment in the U.S. is typically very effective, it鈥檚 a long and expensive process. Even after her four-month isolation period, Skaggs鈥 symptoms made her unable to work. She had to go back on medical leave and was fired soon after.

鈥淚 am literally the best-case scenario,鈥 Skaggs told 小萝莉影视. 鈥淚 had health insurance. I had disability insurance to make sure I could still pay my bills. I had a home I could isolate in. So many people have it so much worse than I do.鈥

Drug-resistant strains are even harder to treat. Lin said patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis could end up in treatment for years, sometimes taking dozens of pills a day and getting “toxic injectable drugs with a lot of side effects.”

An internal memo by U.S. Agency for International Development, obtained by, estimated that cuts made to its programming could lead to a 28-30% increase in tuberculosis cases over one year globally.

鈥淭B anywhere is a threat to people everywhere,鈥 Green said.

Looking ahead

Over 200 more activists attended this year’s Hill Day than last year, meeting with their representatives from 49 states.

鈥淥ne of the congressional staff that we met with told one of the volunteers, 鈥榊ou guys are as prepared for this meeting as folks who represent some of the biggest defense contractors in the nation,'” Lin said.

TB Fighters are already planning for the next Hill Day 鈥 working to push Congress to renew its pledge to

“That replenishment pledge is this fall, and it sets up the funding for the next three years,” Lin said. “That is a critical thing that we 鈥 have been talking to members of Congress about 鈥 to say that this funding is important, that Americans care about this, that we think this is a very worthwhile use of our taxpayer dollars.鈥

Green will be on tour for several more weeks, using his platform to continue raising awareness of this issue.

鈥淗ow we spend our attention matters,鈥 Green said. 鈥淪o to see people using their attention to focus on tuberculosis has been very moving for me and very encouraging. It’s a reminder that together, we can accomplish things that we simply can’t accomplish alone.鈥

鈥淭he lights are a beautiful reminder of the American spirit,鈥 said Roma Daravi, vice president of public relations at the Kennedy Center, in a statement.

The lights are usually plain white, but are sometimes changed to mark special events, such as the rainbow lights that shine during the week leading up to the annual Kennedy Center Honors. At times, the center has changed its colors in support of certain causes: Blue and yellow in support of Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion, and purple and amber to mark the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.

鈥淭he red, white, and blue colors are a powerful symbol of unity and our nation鈥檚 commitment to bringing people together,” Daravi wrote. “What better place for that than at the Kennedy Center, America鈥檚 institution for the arts?鈥

1st round of DC-area storms brings 70 mph winds, with more rough weather to come /weather-news/2025/03/heavy-storms-possible-in-dc-area-wednesday/ Wed, 05 Mar 2025 22:02:26 +0000 /?p=27074994 A squall line raged through the D.C. area Wednesday afternoon, ahead of a cold front that could bring more severe weather to the region Wednesday night.

The line approached from the west, and began creeping into the region just after noon Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Prince William, Stafford and Fauquier counties until 1 p.m., with possible gusts up to 60 mph and the potential for tornado development.

A severe thunderstorm warning for much of southern Maryland, along with part of Fairfax County, Virginia, warned of similar hazards until 1:30 p.m.

The system brought those risks to other parts of the area Wednesday afternoon. 小萝莉影视 meteorologist Mike Stinneford reported a 70 mph gust on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge around 1:45 p.m.

Associated with the approaching cold front, another squall line was developing in the Shenandoah Valley late Wednesday afternoon that Stinneford said could bring severe weather to the D.C. area in the evening, between around 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

“It looks like this line may produce some damaging winds and hail if it holds together after crossing the Blue Ridge,” he said.

“Storms will end before midnight, with partial clearing overnight,” Stinneford said.

After the rough weather associated with that cold front ends, temperatures will drop into the 40s overnight and Thursday will be sunny and cool, according to Stinneford. But Thursday brings a wind alert.

“Winds tomorrow could gust into 40 mph,” Whelan said.

The weekend brings much more pleasant weather.

Javier Reyes, 23, of Silver Spring, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison, with 20 years suspended and five years of supervised probation upon release, after he was found guilty in the shooting death of Walter Woods, 20, of Takoma Park.

Court records show Reyes and Woods met on March 7, 2023, in a park near the Avery Park Apartment Homes on Hampshire Green Lane, in what police later determined was a drug deal.

A witness heard gunshots and called the police. Officers found Woods unresponsive at the scene. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Reyes was originally charged in 2023 and found guilty last December.
