鈥 dubbed MICRO 鈥 is a public transportation pilot program. It is an on-demand, tech-enabled service booked through a mobile app or by phone, connecting riders with regional transit, local hubs or specific addresses.

Riders for now can only reach areas within a preliminary service area in northwest Arlington, within the boundaries of North Glebe Road, Langston Boulevard and the county line.

That’s an area that includes Virginia Hospital Center, the Westover neighborhood, local schools and a couple of Metro stations.

The county says MICRO was designed to act in part as a replacement for ART 鈥斅 that were realigned due to steady-but-low ridership.

Via, a public transit contractor, matches riders going in similar directions for shared trips.

The Via app is available in the App Store and Google Play. The MICRO pilot service operates Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday hours are 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Prices are set at $4.50 per ride. The fare is $2.25 for seniors, persons with disabilities, K-12 students or for rides that start or end at the Ballston or East Falls Church Metro stations.

Riders can get six free rides until May 13. More information can be found at city.ridewithvia.com/art.

Arlington says it will use the pilot project to collect and evaluate passenger feedback to tailor microtransit to all of Arlington County. The pilot’s funding from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and Arlington County is expected to last through fiscal year 2027.

Drivers face new lane closures on GW Parkway and Roosevelt Bridge during repairs /local/2026/03/drivers-face-new-lane-closures-on-gw-parkway-and-roosevelt-bridge-during-repairs/ Mon, 23 Mar 2026 10:18:01 +0000 /?p=29071880 Drivers will need to pack their patience starting Monday if they’re driving along two major D.C.-area arteries.

The National Park Service begins lane closures to resurface sections of the George Washington Parkway between Spout Run Parkway and Interstate 395, and between Reagan National Airport and First Street, in .

To extend the life of the parkway, crews will remove the top layer of worn asphalt and pave it with new asphalt.

During morning weekday rush hours (5:30 to 9:30 a.m.) there will be two southbound lanes toward D.C. and one northbound lane. During the evening rush (2:45 to 7:15 p.m.), drivers will have two northbound lanes and one southbound. During weekday middays (9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.), overnight hours (7:15 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.) and on weekends, drivers will have only have one open lane in each direction.

The National Park Service said construction may require occasional closures along the parkway. It will share detour information before those occur.

Work will continue through mid-June as weather permits.

Drivers will find even more of a squeeze on the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, because the D.C. Department of Transportation is starting placement of new bridge

The work will reduce I-66 Eastbound, or inbound, lanes on the bridge to just one lane through April 4, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. DDOT said that for certain portions of the work, traffic will be stopped, briefly, to set the new deck panels into position.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes, if they can, during those overnight closure windows.

The best TV shows of 2025, according to TV Guide’s Matt Roush /entertainment/2025/12/the-best-tv-shows-of-2025-according-to-tv-guides-matt-roush/ Sat, 27 Dec 2025 23:36:11 +0000 /?p=28740808&preview=true&preview_id=28740808 TV Guide’s Matt Roush says he had to sift through an embarrassment of riches of shows that he watched online or on TV this year. But he did manage to narrow them down to pick

He said he focused on the shows and events that lingered the longest in his mind.

TV Guide's Matt Roush breaks down which TV shows he liked best this year

10. “Severance” on Apple TV: Where the “outie” real lives of Lumon employees are separated from the drudgery of their “innie” cubicle existence. Roush admits he sometimes didn’t understand everything he saw on this show. But he also told 小萝莉影视 that there’s nothing quite like “that weird, little, surrealistic show.”

9. “The American Revolution” on PBS: Roush calls Ken Burns’ 12 hour documentary about America’s birth a “necessary testament to public TV’s essential place in our cultural landscape.”

8. “Andor” on Disney+: Roush said this ”thrilling prequel to the Star Wars movie Rogue One fulfills the intellectual property potential of the renowned sci-fi franchise’s many TV and streaming spinoffs.”

7. “The Diplomat” on Netflix: Roush called the third season of this show the most entertaining political drama since “The West Wing.”

6. “Pluribus” on Apple TV: Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn stars as Carol, a misanthrope who fights back against a suddenly transformed cheerful world. Roush thinks she’ll win an Emmy for the role.

5. “Adolescence” on Netflix: A four-episode series about the fallout from when a teenage boy kills a classmate. Many of the episodes are done almost in a single take, and Roush said it’s “one of the strongest things Netflix gave us all year.”

4. “Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special” on NBC: SNL stars past and present gathered in February to mark the iconic late-night’s show’s half-century milestone.

3. “Alien: Earth” on FX: Roush calls this a “smart, scary and impressively epic reimagining of the sci-fi horror franchise.”

2. “The Studio” on Apple TV: Roush said the “Hollyweird in Seth Rogen’s rollicking and masterful satire” is apropos of modern-day corporate film-making. He said it was a “really clever series 鈥 that had a really good year.”

1. “The Pitt” on HBO Max: Roush’s favorite show of 2025 stars Noah Wylie, of “ER” fame, as the head of a hospital room in Pittsburgh. He called it “an instant classic” that recreated the medical drama. “Great acting, just great production. One of the great genres of television and they just took it over the edge. It was an amazing series,” Roush said. The next season of “The Pitt” arrives on Jan. 8, 2026.

How one Maryland student is dealing with being at Brown University during the deadly shooting /maryland/2025/12/how-one-maryland-student-is-dealing-with-being-at-brown-university-during-the-deadly-shooting/ Sun, 21 Dec 2025 14:09:30 +0000 /?p=28723460 A gunman shot and killed two students and wounded nine others at Brown University’s School of Engineering in Providence, Rhode Island, on Dec. 13.

This shooting highlights the issue of gun violence that is affecting students across the U.S.

“I don’t think entering Brown anyone could have possibly expected this. I don’t think anyone does expect this to happen at their school until it does happen,” Teo Miranda-Moreno, of Ellicott City, Maryland, told 小萝莉影视.

Miranda-Moreno is a freshman at Brown University and was in the school library when the gunfire began and was kept under lockdown for seven hours.

He knew one of the two students 鈥 Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov and Ella Cook 鈥 that were shot and killed by a gunman, who was later found dead.

“I was robbed of ever getting the chance to get a closer bond with Muhammad, ever getting the chance to meet Ella,” Miranda-Moreno said. “As a community, we were robbed of these two beautiful people who were friends with anyone they met.”

As a student now associated with a school shooting, he’s been impacted in such a way that he doesn’t know if he can ever fully heal. Even though he appreciates the university for supporting the students during this horrific situation, Miranda-Moreno wants to add his voice to those calling for some action to stop gun violence.

“We have to sit down and work together to try to stop these firearms from being put out into our communities,” he said.

Long-abandoned strip mall in Arlington to get a new life /arlington/2025/12/long-abandoned-strip-mall-in-arlington-to-get-a-new-life/ Sun, 14 Dec 2025 19:12:29 +0000 /?p=28699750 The Arlington County Board gave final approval at its Saturday meeting to a major redevelopment project at 2601 Columbia Pike in Arlington, Virginia.

“The Elliott” will be a 6-story, mixed-use property, with 271 apartments and about 15,000 square feet of retail space. It will replace the Fillmore Gardens shopping center on Columbia Pike, east of Walter Reed Drive.

Under the redevelopment plan, a parking lot would be turned over to the county 鈥 to potentially become part of an expanded Penrose Square.

Several projects proposed for that strip fell through over the years, leaving the property empty as it fell into disrepair.

The strip mall housed the Salsa Room, Atilla’s restaurant, a CVS and a number of other small businesses.

Arlington Board Chair Takis Karantonis lauded the approval at the board meeting.

“This is very personal to me. I worked in the building that this new building will replace for almost 10 years,” he said.

Karantonis lives in south Arlington and said he’s looking forward to having new apartments filled with “270 new neighbors, new neighbors of mine, in my neighborhood, fully compliant of the form-based code that was approved in months, in months, rather than years.”

He was referring to a development option now being used by Arlington County to move projects along quicker.

The president of the that he hopes some mom-and-pop businesses can return to the site.

This would be the latest boost for the busy Columbia Pike corridor of Arlington. Residents in that Penrose area are enjoying new pavement, sidewalks, street lights and traffic lights along Columbia Pike, after more than two years of road and utility work.

This year’s leaf collection for D.C. begins on Monday, Nov. 3, which happens to fall right after Halloween weekend.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a news conference each residential neighborhood will receive at least two leaf collections during the season.

鈥淭here are many ways that DPW and residents work together to keep our city clean and safe, and leaf collection is one of them,鈥 Bowser said, referring to D.C.’s Department of Public Works.

The leaf collection season will run through February.

Bowser said residents should rake their leaves into tree boxes or curbs in front of their homes. Leaves can be placed in paper bags, but crews will not collect leaves in plastic bags.

鈥淲e encourage everyone to look up your collection zone, pay attention to when DPW announces that they鈥檙e 10 days out, and then work together with your neighbors to have leaves in tree boxes or curbside for collection,” she said.

In about a week, residents who receive trash and recycling services from DPW will receive a leaf collection brochure outlining when they can expect their first collection this season.

Throughout February, 小萝莉影视 is celebrating Black History Month. Join us on air and online as we bring you the stories, people and places that make up our diverse community.

With its gardens and art installations, Arlington鈥檚 Met Park, in Pentagon City, has been open for almost two years now. But one prominent feature still holds a surprise for many visitors.

What looks like a brick tower that might have been something old the park was built around, is actually an art installation itself, reminding visitors of the history of the land on which the park sits.

That area, next to Amazon HQ2, used to be an African American community known as Queen City. But it disappeared in the 1940s, when the land was taken for the construction of roads leading up to the Pentagon and residents were forced to move.

When it opened, artist Nekisha Durrett said it was in researching the stories of those displaced residents that she came up with the idea for 鈥淨ueen City.鈥 That鈥檚 the name of the tower and the 903 teardrop-shaped sculptures that are inside.

They hang from the interior walls of the circular structure, drawing your eyes up to a skylight at the top. Each vessel is crafted by Black ceramists, including some from the D.C. area, and is meant to represent a person who was displaced.

As part of 小萝莉影视鈥檚 commemoration of Black History Month, 小萝莉影视 recently reported on the history of that long-lost community in East Arlington, and how the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington is helping keep the memory of the Queen City community alive.

‘My first example of a public servant’: DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, community leaders mourn death of Joe Bowser /dc/2024/08/my-first-example-of-a-public-servant-dc-mayor-muriel-bowser-community-leaders-mourn-death-of-joe-bowser/ Sun, 04 Aug 2024 08:57:02 +0000 /?p=26291786 D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said she’s heartbroken about the passing of her father, Joe Bowser, who died Friday. He was 88 years old.

In on his death, Mayor Bowser said that she owes her career in public service to her father.

“For 52 years, my dad has been at my side 鈥 guiding me, cheering for me, loving me,” Mayor Bowser said. “He was the first person to take me to a community meeting. The first person to teach me that if something needs to be fixed, then step up and fix it 鈥 and finish any job you start.

Mayor Bowser called her father “bold” and “uncompromising” when it came to doing what’s right: “My first example of a public servant. The person 鈥 along with my mom 鈥 to show me unconditional love,” the mayor wrote of her father.

The 88-year-old held the bible for Mayor Bowser when she was first sworn into office, a favor that she returned when swearing her father into service as an officer in the North Michigan Park Civic Association.

“That was what it meant to walk in Joe Bowser’s footsteps 鈥 always knowing he was there, always pushing me to keep up,” Bowser wrote.

Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent Gray was among those who sent condolences to the Bowser family Saturday, encouraging others to help honor the life and legacy of Joe Bowser.

“We can honor Joe Bowser’s life by emulating his endeavors to empower people, build stronger neighborhoods, and especially by holding those we love close,” Gray said.

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb said that Joe Bowser “was a dedicated community leader and advocate for all Washingtonians.”

“His presence will be sorely missed in Ward 5 and across the District,” Schwalb added.

“God blessed me and Miranda with you Dad. I’m heartbroken. I know that you will continue to guide me, and I will work every day to make you and mom proud. There will never be another Joe Bowser,” Mayor Bowser wrote. “You will be missed.”

‘The ultimate working dog’: Montgomery Co. K9s with Czech heritage make embassy appearance /montgomery-county/2024/05/the-ultimate-working-dog-montgomery-co-k9s-with-czech-heritage-make-embassy-appearance/ Mon, 13 May 2024 01:24:28 +0000 /?p=26024166 Local canines of Czech origin put on an exciting show at the Czech Republic embassy in D.C. on Saturday.

This video is no longer available.

Rey is a member of the Montgomery County Sheriff鈥檚 Office K9 unit. K9 Bolo is with the Rockville City Police Department. They were born in Europe, but trained here.

Montgomery County Sheriff鈥檚 Deputy Zach Buttrey, who has been a member of the K9 unit for 14 years, said the dogs have been part of the embassy open house for the past few years.

On Saturday, Rey and Bolo, both a Belgian Malinois-German Shepherd mix, showed off how they track and even how they attack on command.

“The dogs are great. They’re very smart, very loyal, very protective, and they are the ultimate working dog because they want to work,” Buttrey said.

Buttrey led off the demonstration by having someone from the crowd toss a flashlight onto the grassy hillside outside the embassy. It didn’t take Rey long to sniff it out.

“Right now she’s looking for human odor,” Rey’s handler said.

Then it was time for Bolo’s appearance. He sat, patiently waiting for the order to attack the padded sleeve Buttrey had slid onto his arm. The dog whined and tugged 鈥 and only stopped once Buttrey pulled his arm out of the sleeve. The crowd applauded the K9 as it shook its target back and forth with its mouth.

Deputy Zach Buttrey speaks to the crowd as Bolo’s and his handler (right), Rockville City police Cpl. Ali Zeighani, prepare to show what a police K9 with Czech heritage is capable of. (小萝莉影视 / Sandy Kozel)

Buttrey said a demonstration like this one “shows the public how helpful the K9s are, whether it鈥檚 to locate a suspect, locate a missing person, find some evidence, (or) search a building for someone.” He calls the K9s a great resource for assisting law enforcement.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has five K9 dogs and two therapy dogs. They live with their human partners and are ”family dogs when they’re not working,” Buttrey told the crowd.

Editor’s Note: This story has been updated from a prior version that incorrectly stated Bolo’s place works with Montgomery County Sheriff鈥檚 Office. The canine is a member of Rockville City police.

Columbia Pike road repair project a disruptive but necessary nuisance in Arlington Co. /arlington/2023/09/columbia-pike-road-repair-project-a-disruptive-but-necessary-nuisance-in-arlington-co/ Mon, 25 Sep 2023 08:39:26 +0000 /?p=25197092 Arlington County, Virginia, isn’t sugarcoating it. The next phase of its multiyear, multimillion dollar road improvement project along Columbia Pike is expected to cause traffic disruption and delays, not to mention dust, mud, noise and debris.

“I鈥檓 not going to lie, it’s going to be pretty disruptive,” said Sheila Borkar, project manager for this phase of the Columbia Pike Multimodal Project.

Impacts will include detours, lane reductions, turn restrictions, sidewalk closures and bus stop relocations.

Working toward a ‘complete street’

The county is expecting to start construction on what it calls “Segment D” this fall, according to Borkar. That covers Columbia Pike between S. Garfield Street and S. Courthouse Road. Improvements will include wider sidewalks, new streetlights and trees, new transit stations and improved bus operations. It’s a big project, not expected to wrap up until late 2025.

According to , residents should expect to “see and hear dust, mud, noise, debris, and temporary traffic and parking restrictions.” The work hours will be Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Borkar said a priority is improving bus service.

“Columbia Pike is one of the most heavily-traveled transit corridors in the state of Virginia,” she said. “We’re going to be putting in a consistent, five-lane roadway. For the most part, it’s going to be two lanes in each direction and left turn lanes where possible.”

The county is transforming the main thoroughfare into a “complete street that balances all modes of travel and supports high-quality, high-frequency transit service. In addition to visible improvements to the road, extensive work will occur below the roadway to replace aging and leak-prone water and sewer pipes,” according to the project website.

A map of Columbia Pike Forward project. (Courtesy Arlington County)

‘It鈥檚 really too bad it has to take so long’

Those goals come with growing pains. Many of the 40,000 residents who live along the Columbia Pike corridor 鈥 and the people who travel along the road by either bus or car 鈥 have been dealing with road disruptions since the spring of 2018. The first segment completed was from the Arlington County line with Falls Church to Four Mile Run, an area leading into busy Baileys Crossroads.

Much of the work still underway is around George Mason Drive. Robert Russ works at the Columbia Pike Thrift Shop at that intersection. He said he’s noticed the road construction affecting business.

“A lot of people, I think, aren’t coming in because they can’t find a place to park,” Russ said. “Some days, the traffic cones or equipment are out there so you can hardly even get into the street.”

But he’s philosophical about the project, telling 小萝莉影视, “You know, road construction is inevitable. It’s got to be done. But it鈥檚 really too bad it has to take so long.”

Waiting for a bus at that torn-up intersection, John Andre said the biggest issue for him is that “we used to have a shelter here and they took that completely out.”

Segment D is affecting some heavily-visited businesses, including the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse, Bob & Edith’s Diner, the Giant Food grocery store, as well as shops and restaurants at or near Penrose Square.

Gi Lee runs Rappahannock Coffee shop on Columbia Pike near S. Barton Street. He said, even with the minor road work being done now, customers have been complaining. Before the county moves in to start its work, Washington Gas is doing utility work on the Pike between S. Courthouse Road and South Walter Reed Drive.

Michael McMahon owns the popular Celtic House restaurant on Columbia Pike. McMahon said he’s already been notified that he’ll permanently lose 10 parking spots in front of his business for road widening.

“[We get a] nice bit of business coming out of the D.C. and Alexandria areas 鈥 People come actually for our food and atmosphere,” McMahon said. “Those people won’t be inclined to come if it鈥檚 difficult to get down here.”

Arlington resident David Allman, who takes public transportation, said he’s fine with the project.

“It’s stuff that’s got to be done,” Allman said. “So 鈥 just going to have to suck it up, I guess.”

Know before you go

Borkar said she knows a lot of people are “really anxious for this project to be over and we are doing our best to move quickly 鈥 but I think it’s going to look really nice when it’s all done after 2025.”

Borkar added, “If you go to our website, , we will be giving specific information about traffic impacts two weeks in advance.”

Also on that website, people can provide an email address to subscribe to Columbia Pike transportation updates.

At the eastern end of Columbia Pike, toward the Pentagon, the road has been closed and is being rerouted for another huge project 鈥 the expansion of Arlington National Cemetery. But that’s another story.

The Living with Road Repairs series 小萝莉影视’s Sandy Kozel airs throughout the week of Sept. 25 on 小萝莉影视. and reaction from those impacted.聽
