Sure, Sinner had won his opening five matches of his title defense at the All England Club. But none of those performances resembled the way that earlier this year during a 30-match winning streak.

So how did the top-ranked Sinner suddenly rediscover the form that enabled him to completely overwhelm Djokovic 鈥 the seven-time Wimbledon champion 鈥 during Friday鈥檚 highly awaited encounter on Centre Court?

The answer lies in a return to familiar gound.

Instead of continuing to toil away on Wimbledon鈥檚 grass courts, Sinner spent Wednesday practicing on an indoor hard court, the top-ranked player鈥檚 team said.

Hard courts are the surface where Sinner has won three of his four Grand Slam titles and the indoor setting was reminiscent of where Sinner learned to play while growing up in a small Alpine village in the Italian Dolomites.

The decision by his two coaches, Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, enabled Sinner to regain the timing that has made him the strongest and most feared baseline player in the sport.

鈥淗e鈥檚 reminded himself just how much that ball can explode off his racket,鈥 said Andre Agassi, who was also coached by Cahill in his career.

Agassi noted how Sinner was 鈥渟winging with a full conviction鈥 against Djokovic.

The improvement displayed against Djokovic was a stark contrast from Sinner鈥檚 opening five matches.

Sinner twice had to come back from a set down in a five-set marathon against Miomir Kecmanovic in his opener; he was pushed to two tiebreakers by 48th-ranked Nuno Borges in the second round; dropped his serve twice against Jenson Brooksky in the third round; had to play another tiebreaker against Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki in the round of 16; and was also tested by Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinals.

Against Djokovic, Sinner led 40-26 in winners, committed only 15 unforced errors to Djokovic鈥檚 23 and saved the only break point he faced with an ace.

鈥淲as a good old blowout,鈥 Djokovic acknowledged.

Agassi, who won Wimbledon in 1992, also preferred to play on hard courts and was also known for hugging the baseline and taking the ball early like Sinner.

鈥淲ith the grass, especially if you鈥檙e going to live aggressively, you have to almost count on that bounce or you got to wait, take a beat, let it bounce, know where the ball鈥檚 going to be so you can hit that ball square,鈥 Agassi said on the BBC

鈥淲hat that does over time is it makes you hesitate a little bit, makes you forget the cleanness of your swing,鈥 Agassi added, noting that he, too, would seek out hard courts during the grass season: 鈥淵ou just got to go clean that up and the best way to do it for me has always been getting onto the hard court, trusting the balance, reminding myself what conviction feels like when I hit the ball.鈥

Djokovic had beaten Sinner over five sets in their previous meeting in this year鈥檚 Australian Open semifinals. This time, Djokovic never really threatened and it was finished in three sets.

鈥淗e was just a level or more better than I was,鈥 Djokovic said, adding that Sinner was the 鈥渕uch better player鈥 and a 鈥渄ominant force.鈥

Sinner hadn鈥檛 displayed that much confidence since the opening two sets and six games of the third set against Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second-round of Roland Garros in late May 鈥 before he wilted in a Paris heat wave and was eliminated in stunning fashion.

Now, he鈥檚 favored to seal his second straight Wimbledon title against in Sunday鈥檚 final.

Zverev is 鈥榓 different player now鈥

Zverev, whose breakthrough at Roland Garros came in his fourth Grand Slam final, is attempting to become the first man in the professional era (since 1968) to win his second major title at the next event immediately after his first.

But Sinner has won nine straight meetings with Zverev and 14 consecutive sets against the German.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 underestimate anyone, especially in a Slam final,鈥 Sinner said. 鈥淗is victory at Roland Garros really helped him. He鈥檚 playing very aggressively. He鈥檚 a different player now.鈥

By reaching the final, Zverev will leapfrog the injured Carlos Alcaraz and move up to No. 2 when the new rankings are released on Monday.

Serving precision

Sinner served 16 aces and no double-faults against Djokovic and won 88% of the points when he got his first serve in.

鈥淵ou cannot attack his first serve. You can try to read it, chip it, block it, get it back in play,鈥 said Djokovic, one of the game鈥檚 top returners. 鈥淰ery unpredictable serve, great variety, great balance, great pop. He鈥檚 using his height extremely well.鈥

Djokovic also had high praise for Sinner鈥檚 second serve, noting how he places it 鈥渧ery deep in the box鈥 with 鈥渁 lot of rotation.”

鈥淗e can go for speed. He doesn鈥檛 make many double-faults. He鈥檚 just super solid,鈥 Djokovic added.

The 6-foot-3 (1.91-meter) Sinner is the tournament leader with 113 aces while Zverev is fifth with 87. But the 6-foot-6 (1.98-meter) Zverev has put 74% of his first serves in play compared to 66% for Sinner.

Another aspect of their success rate is remarkably close: Sinner has held in 96 of his 102 service games and Zverev has held in 97 of 102.

鈥淭he serve-return patterns,” Zverev said, 鈥渁re going to be very, very important.鈥

Major German carmakers hit by steep China sales plunge as competition heats up /world/2026/07/major-german-carmakers-hit-by-steep-china-sales-plunge-as-competition-heats-up/ Sat, 11 Jul 2026 14:18:38 +0000 /?p=29422580&preview=true&preview_id=29422580 HONG KONG (AP) 鈥 Major German carmakers saw sharp quarterly sales declines in as domestic demand weakened and competition heated up in the world鈥檚 biggest auto market.

At Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche, China sales for the April-June quarter plummeted between 30% and 41% compared with the same period a year ago, according to company data released over the past week.

For the first half of this year, they all reported a more than 20% year-on-year drop in China. The falling China sales have squeezed their overall profits and in some cases offset gains from other regions.

This also comes at a time when these legacy German carmakers are faced with intensified competition from Chinese automakers outside of China, , as leading Chinese brands like BYD overseas.

The latest quarterly sales declines were some of the steepest seen for the German automakers in China, said Lei Xing, an independent auto analyst.

Volkswagen group, for example, saw deliveries in China down 36.6% during the quarter to 424,300 vehicles, which dragged down its global sales to a 8.6% decline, even as deliveries increased in Europe and the Americas.

The Wolfsburg, Germany-based auto group, which has been on the Chinese market, said it would be after the latest sales declines.

China鈥檚 prolonged and an economic slowdown have hurt consumer sentiment, with more people shunning big-ticket purchases. in its domestic car market and a yearslong fierce price war many European carmakers, with drivers opting for affordable Chinese car brands.

Porsche, part of the Volkswagen group, called China鈥檚 market environment 鈥渃hallenging鈥 in a statement, while Mercedes-Benz said China is facing 鈥渁 significantly weaker overall market and macroeconomic environment.鈥

China鈥檚 passenger car sales at home fell 24% in the first half of this year , according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, an industry group.

Consultancy AlixPartners expects sales of light vehicles, including passenger cars, in China will likely fall about 10% for the whole of this year.

As Chinese car brands become increasingly preferable in China, 鈥渇oreign automakers are going to have to fight for every share of (the) market,鈥 Stephen Dyer, Asia-Pacific leader of the automotive practice at AlixPartners, said at a news briefing last month.

German auto groups remain much stronger in making internal combustion engine vehicles, such as gasoline cars, than electric vehicles, said Chris Liu, with the research and advisory group Omdia, at a time when EVs sales in China are doing better than conventional fuel vehicles.

鈥淭he German automakers are bearing most of the brunt,鈥 said Xing, the independent analyst.

Chinese carmakers also have a competitive edge over foreign automakers as they typically update their model lineup a lot more frequently than their rivals, Dyer added.

America In Focus: Fed officials divided on US inflation views; US home prices hit all-time high /news/2026/07/america-in-focus-fed-officials-divided-on-us-inflation-views-us-home-prices-hit-all-time-high/ Sat, 11 Jul 2026 14:11:27 +0000 /?p=29422564&preview=true&preview_id=29422564 The economy, inflation and how those forces could impact the lives of Americans were front and center over the past week. Trips to the grocery store or gas station are more painful than they were last year, and rising costs are impacting the decisions of both households and businesses.

Here鈥檚 a snapshot of prominent economic data and news that occurred over the past week and what it potentially means for you.

IMF expects world economy to grow a sluggish 3% this year

The International Monetary Fund this week downgraded its for the world economy in 2026 citing the energy shock caused by the . But the fallout from the conflict is being partially offset by booming investment in and other technologies.

The IMF now expects the global economy to expand by a sluggish 3% in 2026, down from 3.5% last year and from the . The fund expects worldwide growth to rebound to 3.4% next year.

The IMF expects the U.S. economy 鈥 the world鈥檚 largest 鈥 to grow a solid 2.3% this year, up from 2.1% in 2025 and unchanged from the April forecast. The that share the euro currency, hit hard by higher energy prices, are collectively forecast to grow just 0.9% this year, down from 1.4% in 2025.

US home prices hit all-time high

Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes slowed in June, but a key measure of home prices climbed to an , adding to prospective homebuyers鈥 affordability challenges.

Existing home sales fell 2.4% last month from May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.09 million units, the National Association of Realtors said this week. Sales rose 2.8% compared with June last year.

The latest sales tally fell short of the roughly 4.21 million pace economists were expecting, according to FactSet.

Despite the lackluster sales, home prices continued to rise nationally last month. The U.S. median sales price increased 1.8% in June from a year earlier to $440,600, an all-time high on data going back to 1999, NAR said. Home prices have risen on an annual basis for 36 months in a row.

The deep divide at the US Fed over inflation

The Federal Reserve鈥檚 rate-setting committee is over whether inflation is likely to stay elevated or whether it will cool once the Iran war winds down, according to minutes released this week.

In the first set of minutes released under , 鈥渕any鈥 of the Fed鈥檚 19 officials said its key rate would be unchanged from or slightly below its current level of 3.6% by the end of this year. But they also also said that it would likely be higher by year-end.

Forecasts released after the meeting ended June 17 showed that half of the 18 policymakers who submitted projections supported lifting rates by the end of this year, while the other half supported keeping them unchanged or reducing them. Warsh did not submit a forecast, reflecting his view that doing so can lock policymakers into a specific approach that is harder to change if the economy shifts direction.

Iran war may lead to 1st global oil demand slide since pandemic

Global oil demand will likely decline this year for the first time since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic isolated billions of people at home, according to the International Energy Agency.

The agency expects demand to drop by 1 million barrels per day in 2026 due to higher prices and disruptions to physical supply that weighed heavily on various parts of the world.

Most of the decline in demand has been in Asia, which is heavily reliant on oil shipped through the Strait of Hormuz that has largely been shut down to tanker traffic by the war.

Asian nations have altered workdays and made other changes to lower energy use during the war.

One notable exception to the global slump in oil usage was in the United States, where gasoline use increased in the second quarter of 2026, despite the fact that pump prices were almost 50% above their pre-war levels in May.

US jobless claims dip modestly

The number of Americans filing for dipped slightly last week as layoffs in the U.S. remain historically low.

U.S. applications for jobless aid in the week ending July 4 ticked down by 2,000 to 215,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Analysts surveyed by the data firm FactSet forecast 220,000 new applications.

Weekly filings for unemployment benefits are considered a proxy for layoffs and are close to a real-time indicator of the health of the U.S. job market.

In its more comprehensive June jobs report last week, the government reported that employers , adding only 57,000 jobs. That鈥檚 less than half the previous month鈥檚 total and a sign that companies remain cautious.

Wall Street in flux as Iran war drags on

U.S. stocks and drifted toward a of the week Friday following on worries about how the will affect the .

The S&P 500 rose and was on track to close out a fourth winning week in the last five. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up slightly, and the Nasdaq composite was nearly unchanged.

Oil prices held relatively steady, even after hit Iran after .

US citizen tests positive for Ebola in Congo /world/2026/07/us-citizen-tests-positive-for-ebola-in-congo/ Sat, 11 Jul 2026 13:55:42 +0000 /?p=29422525&preview=true&preview_id=29422525 KINSHASA, Congo (AP) 鈥 A U.S. citizen working for a humanitarian organization in Congo has tested positive for the Ebola virus, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday, as the Central African country struggles to contain the swelling outbreak.

The CDC said it was working with the person鈥檚 employer, U.S. agencies, the public health authorities and Congolese partners to prevent further transmission and identify close contacts. It did not provide any further details.

Earlier this week, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said that the outbreak is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded on the continent, with 1,830 confirmed cases in Congo, including 648 deaths. Cases have also been confirmed in neighboring Uganda.

In the first week of the outbreak, an American doctor working in Congo tested positive for the virus and was transferred to Germany for treatment.

Initially, Trump administration officials had said that the United States was planning to send Americans who are exposed to Ebola while abroad to a new facility in Kenya instead of flying them home. But the project has been suspended after an order from a Kenyan court.

The Congolese authorities declared a fresh Ebola outbreak on May 15, after the disease had been transmitting for weeks without official detection, according to the World Health Organization

The outbreak is caused by the rare , which has no approved vaccine or treatment.

Efforts to contain the virus have also been hampered by a funding gap, attacks on health centers and an ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, the epicenter of the outbreak.

BRITISH OPEN ’26: A hole-by-hole look at Royal Birkdale /sports/2026/07/british-open-26-a-hole-by-hole-look-at-royal-birkdale/ Sat, 11 Jul 2026 13:44:34 +0000 /?p=29422514&preview=true&preview_id=29422514 SOUTHPORT, England (AP) 鈥 A hole-by-hole look at Royal Birkdale, site of the 154th British Open to be played July 16-19:

No. 1, 447 yards, par 4

One of the toughest opening holes in the Open rotation. This requires a tee shot to a fairway that bends to the left. The closer the drive is to the fairway bunker on the left, the better view of the green and angle of attack. The prevailing wind is left-to-right and there is out-of-bounds down the right. Two pot bunkers on either side guard the front of the green.

No. 2, 419 yards, par 4

Two bunkers are to the right side of the fairway nearly 300 yards from the tee, and there is severe mounding up the left side between 250 and 290 yards. It plays into the prevailing wind, and the green is protected by six bunkers and rough-covered banks.

No. 3, 450 yards, par 4

A tee built in the dunes turns this hole into a slight dogleg to the right, and additional bunkers on the left side of the fairway at just over 300 yards makes a partially blind tee shot even tougher. The tee shot should stay on the left side of the fairway to open up the best approach to a green guarded by four pot bunkers.

No. 4, 219 yards, par 3

The par 3 is made even more difficult by a right-to-left prevailing wind and a green that is some 40 yards deep. The green no longer has a bunker across the front so shots can run up to the green. But there are three bunkers to the left and one to the right. Mounds to the right will kick the errant shots away from the greens, making it tough to save par.

No. 5, 321 yards, par 4

The hole has been redesigned so that it no longer is a blind tee shot and will tempt players, depending on the wind, to drive the green. There is a pond to the right, an odd sight for links golf. It was there in 2017 but covered by shrubs. The green is surrounded by seven bunkers. Going long could spell trouble.

No. 6, 514 yards, par 4

The signature hole on the front side and the toughest hold in 2017. There are two pot bunkers on the right at the dogleg and one on the left for any drive that runs through the fairway. The tee shot must stay between them, leaving a long approach to an elevated green that is contoured and surrounded by dunes.

No. 7, 151 yards, par 3

The shortest par 3 at Royal Birkdale, the green has been slightly raised to create steep slopes into some of the deepest bunkers. Still in play is the famed 鈥渄oughnut鈥 bunker with a circular patch of grass in the middle.

No. 8, 459 yards, par 4

This usually plays downwind with a bunker on the left and three more on the right. The tee shot must thread its way between them. Two deep pot bunkers guard a large green that is difficult to read.

No. 9, 414 yards, par 4

This features a blind tee shot, rare for this links, and a dogleg right. There are no fairway bunkers, making it tempting to cut the corner, but extensive mounds down the right side of the fairway will punish anything less than perfection. The elevated green has a bunker front right set into the hill.

No. 10, 397 yards, par 4

Four bunkers must be avoided on a hole that bends to the left. Two bunkers are set among the dunes to the right.

No. 11, 434 yards, par 4

This hole typically plays into the wind, and the tee shot must avoid four bunkers placed between 280 yards and 350 yards. The variety of tough hole locations on the long, angled green require good decisions on club selection.

No. 12, 186 yards, par 3

This is among the most memorable par 3s in the British Open rotation, set among deep dunes and protected by two bunkers in the front.

No. 13, 502 yards, par 4

Five fairway bunkers bring trouble into play no matter which way the wind is blowing, although it is slightly easier at the players鈥 backs. The long iron is required for the second shot to a green framed by the dunes with three bunkers toward the front. This is where Jordan Spieth took an unplayable penalty shot from the driving range in his 2017 victory.

No. 14, 602 yards, par 5

This effectively played as No. 15 previously and still is the longest wait for a par 5 among Open courses. Bunkers are positioned on both sides of the fairway. A good drive makes it easy to get beyond a second cluster of bunkers. The green is protected by two bunkers in the front. The hole has 12 bunkers.

No. 15, 241 yards, par 3

An entirely new par 3 and the longest at Royal Birkdale. This typically plays downwind to a large green with a narrow entrance that makes the green look smaller than it really is. The green slopes from front to back. A front pin is intimidating with two bunkers at the entrance.

No. 16, 393 yards, par 4

The strength of the hole is the prevailing wind over native grass to the fairway. There are runoff areas on both sides and behind the green, making it important to stay straight. Two bunkers are on the right side of the green.

No. 17, 566 yards, par 5

The tee shot is between two large dunes and must avoid two bunkers on the right. The hole then turns to the left to a green that is narrow and has two tiers with extreme undulations not usually found on a links course.

No. 18, 508 yards, par 4

What previously moved from left-to-right is now a straight hole with the tee box moved to the left, allowing players to clearly see the six bunkers on either side of the fairway that must be avoided. The green sits below the famous white clubhouse, and its narrow entrance is guarded by three bunkers.

Hundreds of firefighters battle wildfire in southern Spain that killed at least 12 /world/2026/07/hundreds-of-firefighters-battle-wildfire-in-southern-spain-that-killed-at-least-12/ Sat, 11 Jul 2026 13:43:03 +0000 /?p=29422334&preview=true&preview_id=29422334 BEJAR, SPAIN (AP) 鈥 Hundreds of firefighters backed by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft struggled Saturday to contain one of Spain’s deadliest wildfires that killed a least 12 people.

A combination of light winds and high humidity are helping crews but the sheer size of the fire still poses challenges, Antonio Sanz, head of Andalusia鈥檚 emergency services, said. The fire has scorched some 66 square kilometers (25 square miles) of forest and farmland, about the size of Manhattan.

Sanz said fire crews carried out controlled burns overnight around the perimeter of the fire, which broke out late Thursday in a semi-arid area near the Sierre de Los Filabres mountains in in Almer铆a province, just as Spain was sizzling.

Most of the victims, who are believed to be foreign nationals, died after ignoring shelter-in-place instructions, authorities said. Seven people died while on foot after abandoning their cars.

Four of the dead were believed to be British because the steering wheel of their burned-out car was on the right side, as with British vehicles, regional authorities said.

Sanz said Saturday that authorities had completed autopsies and DNA samples were collected to identify them.

Spain鈥檚 Foreign Minister Jos茅 Manuel Albares has spoken with his counterparts from the U.K., Belgium, Canada and the Netherlands about the fire, Spain’s official EFE news agency reported. Almer铆a is home to one of the largest communities of foreign nationals in Andalusia.

Authorities proactively evacuated 1,448 people from some 11 areas.

Fleeing the flames

Jeffrey and Christine Kember were watching a favorite TV show in their Los Pinos farmhouse when the blare of a siren alerted them to the fire.

Jeffrey Kember said at the sight of the advancing flames, both he and his wife jumped into their respective cars while also trying to help a neighbor with two toddlers.

He described how the couple got separated and how he was unable to speak to his wife because she didn’t have a phone on her.

鈥淚’m driving through the flames. It was actually flames. I though, 鈥業 can鈥檛 stop, I just gotta go,鈥 Jeffrey Kember told The Associated Press, with his wife next to him outside an evacuation center.

“It was eerie because all of a sudden I came out of the flames and it was all bright sunshine. It was like surreal. Ridiculous!鈥

Meanwhile, Spanish authorities arrested two people for ignoring evacuation orders and returning to a high-risk area, according to EFE. Authorities are still combing through the B茅dar area in search for any victims.

Europe withers in intense heat

Spain has battled frequent and severe heat waves in recent years, with temperatures often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Wind, high temperatures and little rainfall help small wildfires grow into unchecked blazes.

Justice Minister F茅lix Bola帽os on Saturday attributed the ferocity of the Almeira wildfire to a 鈥渃limate emergency.鈥 He said the fire, at its most intense, advanced as fast as 100 meters per minute (328 feet per minute.)

Spain鈥檚 Meteorological Agency warned that the wildfire risk over the weekend will remain very high.

In June, Spain , with over 1,000 excess deaths.

Europe is the world鈥檚 fastest-warming continent, with temperatures increasing twice as fast as the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union鈥檚 Copernicus Climate Change Service. Parts of Western Europe are facing their third heat wave in six weeks. Globally, 2025 was the third-hottest year on record, bringing several intense heat waves across Europe.

Wildfires lash France

Several wildfires remained active across France on Saturday as temperatures soared. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said that 32 people have been arrested across the country since the beginning of the summer in connection with wildfires.

鈥淭hose unacceptable acts, which have disastrous consequences and mobilize our firefighters at the risk of their lives, now fall into the hands of the justice system,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e will continue our determined action and will not let anything slide.鈥

French President Emmanuel Macron also weighed in, recalling in a post on X that nine out of 10 wildfires start because of human activity. More than 25,000 hectares (62,000 acres) of land have burned in France since the start of 2026, roughly double the area compared to the same period last year.

France is experiencing the peak of its third heat wave this summer, with temperatures reaching 40 C across western and central areas and around 37 C (98 F) in Paris. In the French capital, the Eiffel Tower will close in the afternoon over the weekend instead of late at night, as it usually does. The Louvre and Orsay museum have also announced reduced opening hours because of the heat wave.

Last month was France鈥檚 hottest June on record, with deaths during .

Spain and Portugal have faced deadly fires before

Spain is , with last year’s fire season burning more than 393,000 hectares (971,000 acres). according to the European Forest Fire Information System, an area twice as large as London. Four people died.

Spain’s deadliest wildfire was in 1979, when 21 people perished in Lloret de Mar, a coastal town about an hour north of Barcelona.

In 2017, a wildfire in neighboring Portugal left 66 people dead in Pedrogao Grande, located 200 kilometers (120 miles) northeast of Lisbon. In that blaze, while similarly attempting to flee in their cars.

15 Indian tourists killed when a speedboat capsizes in southern Vietnam /world/2026/07/15-indian-tourists-were-killed-after-a-speedboat-capsized-in-southern-vietnam/ Sat, 11 Jul 2026 13:40:35 +0000 /?p=29422185&preview=true&preview_id=29422185 HANOI, Vietnam (AP) 鈥 A tourist boat returning from an island trip in southern Vietnam capsized on Saturday, killing 15 Indian visitors, state media reported.

The speedboat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned about 400 meters (1,310 feet) from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, which is near , authorities were quoted as saying.

Eyewitnesses told VN Express that nearby boats rushed to the scene and began pulling passengers from the water, before border guards, the navy, coast guard and other rescue agencies arrived. The rescue was difficult because many were trapped inside, VN Express reported.

Twenty-one people were rescued, and all the dead were recovered, authorities said. The injured were taken to hospitals.

Footage on Vietnamese TV showed rough seas and strong winds as rescue teams threw life buoys to people in the water. Jet skis ferried survivors back to shore while people on the beach provided first aid to victims.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident and directed authorities to hold those responsible accountable. He also asked authorities to review waterway and maritime safety in the area where the accident happened and other similar areas.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the tourists were employees of a private mobile phone company taking part in an annual meeting. He wrote on social media that Indian Embassy personnel were at the scene.

Phu Quoc in the Gulf of Thailand is one of Vietnam’s most popular beach destinations. Hon May Rut island is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Phu Quoc. They’re known for their white-sand beaches and clear waters and draw millions of domestic and foreign tourists each year.

The cause of the accident wasn’t immediately clear and an investigation was underway.
