Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said the incident involved three men and unfolded聽near the Great Falls area of the river. All three ended up in the water and were able to self-rescue onto the Virginia shoreline.

First responders with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the scene around 2 p.m.

Piringer said one of the men was unconscious and suffering life鈥憈hreatening injuries. He was resuscitated at the scene and transferred by boat for medical care.

The kayaker was later pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Piringer said.

“We believe they were boating in and around the Great Falls and somehow got caught up in some hydraulics up in that area,” Piringer said. “Water’s very low, so it’s treacherous in some areas.”

He said police will conduct a death investigation.

The seizures stemmed from incidents on Wednesday and Thursday, when firearms were found at St. Charles High School in Waldorf.

Sheriff’s deputies searched the homes of two students they believed were responsible for bringing the firearms to the school.

At one home, deputies found a 3D printer they believe was used in the production of a polymer-style firearm recovered by a school resource officer at the high school on Wednesday. The printer was seized as evidence.

On Thursday, a fully automatic handgun was recovered from a different student’s locker. Deputies then obtained a search warrant and found six additional firearms that were “unsecured,” as well as ammunition, magazines and various “firearm accessories” at the home of the student.

The ammunition and four of the firearms were located inside of the student’s bedroom, according to the sheriff’s office.

The case is going to be sent to the State鈥檚 Attorney鈥檚 Office for review to determine the appropriate charges.

Anyone with information on the cases or who has knowledge of any weapons in schools is asked to contact the Charles County Crime Solvers by calling 1-866-411-TIPS. Residents can also submit tips online at www.charlescountycrimesolvers.com or by using the P3Intel mobile app.

Earlier start times & cutting breaks: MCPS changes being considered for next school year /montgomery-county/2026/04/montgomery-co-public-schools-want-community-input-on-possible-schedule-changes/ Sun, 19 Apr 2026 19:36:30 +0000 /?p=29159491 The last day for the 2026-2027 school year for Montgomery County students is set, but it means some calendar adjustments need to be made in order to bank potential makeup days.

The school year must end by June 19, 2027, a date set by the Maryland State Board of Education after the district was approved earlier this year for new scheduling guidelines.

Changes being considered by the district for the next school year include:

  • Starting the school year earlier in August
  • Identifying religious holidays that can be used as inclement weather makeup days
  • Shortening either the winter or spring break

Before the matter is decided, MCPS officials are asking for the community to .

Mapping out makeup days has proved to be a continuous issue for the county during the 2025-2026 school year after snowstorms prompted closures. In fact, efforts to use Eid al-Fitr as a makeup day drew backlash and forced the district to ultimately revert its decision.

The current school year was extended to June 26 before an MSBE waiver allowed officials to trim a few days and shift requirements to allow the system to instead meet a number of school hours.

Whereas the county previously was required to have 180 instructional days, it was allowed to meet a minimum of 1,080 hours of instruction for elementary and middle school students and 1,170 hours for high school students.

The school board is expected to finalize a decision for the 2026-2027 year at its April 30 meeting.

Mahasin El Amin, the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Prince George鈥檚 County, said she was carjacked Thursday after briefly pulling over her Lexus to take a phone call.

Police said the carjacking happened around 12:40 p.m. in the 1900 block of Grand Way Boulevard, off Landover Road, in Bowie.

Investigators said the suspect, Kairee Hicks, showed El Amin a handgun during the carjacking before fleeing in her vehicle. El Amin said the suspect approached her car wearing a face mask and a brown hoodie.

“I just freaked out,” . “It was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me in my life. It was so quick, just like that. And all the thoughts 鈥 like ‘I’m literally going to die.'”

Police located El Amin鈥檚 vehicle Friday in the Lanham area. When officers tried to pull it over, Hicks fled, leading police on a brief pursuit before crashing the car and running away on foot, police said.

Hicks was located and arrested later that day. Police said officers recovered a loaded handgun with an “obliterated serial number” at the time of his arrest.

According to police, Hicks was charged with armed carjacking, carjacking, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, illegal possession of a handgun, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, among additional charges.

Police also said Hicks was charged in connection with an April 10 shooting in which a man was seriously wounded, following a dispute in the 7100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway.

It’s also unclear whether the arrestees were released to their parent and/or guardian.

The arrests stem from what is being referred to as “teen takeovers” that have been happening across the District. The incidents typically involve large gatherings of young people, and have a history of underage drinking and rowdy behavior.

The Saturday arrests, however, aren’t the first to see teens taken into custody during a curfew this month.

On April 4, eight teens were arrested just outside the Navy Yard curfew zone as the city was hosting a “Teen Spring Jam” at the King-Greenleaf Recreation Center. Their ages ranged from 12 to 17 years old.

The arrests came after multiple fights broke out near a that was being hosted by the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation that weekend at the King-Greenleaf Recreation Center.

A second “Teen Spring Jam” is in session this weekend, April 12, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Randall Recreation Center.
