County leaders and the ferry owner, Chuck Kuhn, will hold a news conference Friday morning to formally announce the deal.

The ferry stopped carrying people and cars between Montgomery County and Loudoun County, Virginia, in 2020, when the owner of the ferry and the property owner on the Virginia side couldn鈥檛 come to an agreement over landing rights.

The parties involved have been trying for years to reach a deal to get the ferry running again. It’s not clear whether Montgomery County’s acquisition of the ferry and Maryland-side dock will help accomplish that goal.

Libby Devlin owns Rockland Farm, the site of the ferry landing in Loudoun County. She told 小萝莉影视 she wasn’t aware of the deal and was not invited to Friday’s news conference. Rockland Farm has previously rejected offers to buy land on the Virginia side of the river to get the ferry operational again.

According to sources familiar with the deal between Kuhn and Montgomery County, the county is buying the land in Maryland at a price below appraisal, and Kuhn is donating the ferry operations to the county.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, county council President Natalie Fani-Gonz谩lez, U.S. House Rep. April McClain Delaney and other officials will be on hand Friday to announce more details about the deal.

On July 5 at around 9 p.m., U.S. Park Police officers responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of 14th Street and Independence Avenue in Southwest D.C.

They found Virginia Voight, of Palmyra, New Jersey, in the roadway, suffering what police described as serious injuries. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Voight died a week later, .

A preliminary investigation showed that Voight was riding a motorized mobility scooter through the intersection when a Ford F-150 struck her, police said.

The driver of the truck, Michael Wayne Mills, 55, tried to drive away from the scene until a National Guard member “intervened and detained” him until officers arrived.

Mills was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and leaving after colliding.

Additional charges are possible pending further investigation.

The Prince William County Police Department said the crash happened as Michael Layne Hall, 36, of Woodbridge, was traveling on the eastbound lanes of Old Bridge Road, just as he approached Colby Drive.

“The operator attempted to navigate a right curve in the roadway and crossed into the median, before striking a traffic sign and guardrail,” police said in a Sunday release.

Prince William County officers responded to the Woodbridge scene shortly before 11 p.m.

Preliminary findings by police indicate speed played a factor in the crash. The motorcycle Hall was operating was identified as a 2014 Yamaha CYL – (M) YZF-R1, according to police.

Authorities said Hall was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A vehicle trying to make a left turn struck a motorcycle and another vehicle, killing the 22-year-old motorcyclist and both people inside of the striking vehicle, according to an from Prince George’s County police.

The motorcycle’s driver was Elvin Martinez Hernandez, of Hyattsville. The driver and passenger of the vehicle attempting the turn were 61-year-old Reddick Speight and 62-year-old Terri Stringfellow, both of Adelphi.

Two other people, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Those people were inside the other vehicle that was hit.

The crash happened near New Hampshire Avenue and Metzerott Road around 11:30 p.m., according to

Investigators believe that the motorcycle and another vehicle were driving northbound on New Hampshire Avenue approaching Metzerott Road when a Speight’s vehicle allegedly collided with them while trying to turn onto Metzerott Road.

The 小萝莉影视 Traffic Center reported Wednesday that New Hampshire Avenue on both directions between Piney Branch Road and North Hampton Drive reopened shortly before 6 a.m.

“These individuals recently traveled together to a location in the U.S. experiencing an active measles outbreak,” the state Department of Health .

The agency said others may have been exposed on the afternoon of July 13 in the emergency department waiting room at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Another measles case recently prompted warnings from health officials in Maryland, Virginia and the District. On June 17, a Maryland resident traveled through Dulles International Airport and visited a D.C. urgent care clinic.

Measles is highly contagious. It can spread through the air through coughs, breathing, and sneezes. Early symptoms can include fevers of over 101 degrees, coughs, runny noses, watery eyes and face or body rashes.

It can take up to 21 days after exposure for the first symptoms to appear, and those who are not fully vaccinated or otherwise immune to measles are especially vulnerable.

The five new measles cases in Maryland bring the state’s year-to-date total to nine. The state health department confirmed three cases in 2025, and one in each of the previous two years.

“All Marylanders should review potential exposure times, watch for symptoms, and confirm they are up to date on their measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations,” the health department said.

The incident happened at the Montgomery Village Crossing Shopping Center on Lost Knife Road in Gaithersburg.

Officers responded shortly before 7 p.m. after a caller reported a man at a bus stop who was displaying and loading a gun.

Montgomery County Police Capt. Cody Fields that once officers arrived at the scene, they identified the man and worked to clear the crowded parking lot of the shopping plaza. Officers attempted multiple de-escalation methods for “a series of minutes” with the man, Fields said.

“As they approached the suspect, the suspect took actions that forced the officers to discharge their service weapons, fatally wounding and killing the man involved,” Fields said, adding that it is unclear what actions the man displayed that led to the shooting.

No officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Several officers from the Montgomery County police and the Gaithersburg City Department of Police fired at the suspect, Fields said, but how many and their identities were not revealed. They will be placed on administrative leave.

The shooting investigation has been turned over to the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division.

Graham died at 71 after a 鈥渂rief and sudden illness,鈥� his office said.

U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, of Maryland, said Sunday that he didn’t agree with Graham’s politics, but he offered his condolences and commented on his respect for the senator’s years of service to the country.

鈥淚鈥檓 deeply saddened by Senator Lindsey Graham鈥檚 sudden passing,” Van Hollen said. “While Lindsey and I disagreed on many, many things, we always had an open line of communication and honest conversation. Whenever possible, we worked together to find common ground, including our joint efforts to support our Syrian Kurdish partners and the SDF, who have been our main allies in the fight against ISIS. My heart goes out to Lindsey鈥檚 loved ones during this difficult time.”

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, of Virginia, said he was “heartbroken” to hear of Graham’s passing.

鈥淟indsey and I disagreed on plenty over the years, but I never doubted his love for this country or his commitment to serving it. He was a fierce advocate for the causes he believed in, especially our nation鈥檚 security and the men and women of our armed forces,” Warner said.

He said that Graham’s sense of humor is one of the things he will remember.

“He had a quick wit, a sharp laugh, and an uncanny ability to break the tension with a well-timed joke or story. Even in the toughest moments, he never lost his ability to connect with people, and those personal relationships often mattered more to him than the political disagreements of the day,” he said.

Va. Sen Tim Kaine “deeply appreciated Lindsey鈥檚 strong support for Ukraine and hope the Senate will honor his memory by promptly passing the Russia sanctions bill he championed.”

“My condolences to his friends and family and to the state he loved,” Kaine said in a statement posted online.

Former President Joe Biden said he and his wife Jill were “shocked” by Graham’s death.

“Lindsey and I served together in Congress for over a decade, and worked closely on many issues throughout the years. We traveled the world together as members of the Senate Foreign Relations committee. We disagreed often, and sometimes loudly,” Biden said in a statement.

“Lindsey and I did agree on the profound importance of public service. Like me, he loved the Senate as an institution, even with all its flaws and complexities.”

Kamala Harris, former VP and one-time presidential hopeful, said “I am saddened to learn of the passing of my former colleague, Senator Lindsey Graham. He was full of wit, energy, and charm, and he cared deeply about the Senate and the people of South Carolina. Doug and I are sending our thoughts and our prayers to his friends and loved ones.”

Graham had recently returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he had met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I think that we had really a good meeting. Great briefing by your intel folks,” Graham said about the trip.听

Graham听turned 71 last week and听was known for his keen interest in promoting U.S. foreign policy and a strong defense.

He urged President Trump to remain tough with Iran. The president called听Graham a true patriot and prayers for him is pouring in from lawmakers.

After serving in the House, Graham was elected to the Senate in 2002. He was most recently the chair of the Senate Budget Committee and had served previously as the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Graham briefly ran for president in 2016听and initially didn’t support Donald Trump, but eventually became a close ally. His death leaves Republicans with a 52-47 majority.

South Carolina’s governor will appoint his temporary replacement, and a special election is to be held for a new GOP nominee next month.

Graham had been seeking his fifth term in the Senate听on Capitol Hill.

The was filed in D.C. Superior Court on Thursday, alleging听that John and Herminia Steininger allowed their properties on Columbia Road, Northwest, and Lamont Street, Northwest, to fall into “extreme disrepair,” jeopardizing the health and safety of their tenants.

Schwalb’s office said the Steiningers also failed to pay back the District for the cost of re-housing dozens of tenants after a September 2024 gas explosion severely damaged one of the buildings, left a woman injured and forced people from their homes.

The residence where the explosion took place is located on Columbia Road, Northwest, in Columbia Heights. Between that property and the other building of concern on Lamont Street, Northwest, in Mount Pleasant, the landlords have also been cited with more than 120 housing code violations in total since 2018, according to from Schwalb’s office.

These violations 鈥� which include broken windows, rodent infestations, inoperable smoke and fire alarms and water leaks, among others 鈥� have led to fines of more than $140,000. To date, the D.C. attorney’s general’s office said, none of these problems have been addressed.

鈥淭hese landlords neglected their properties and legal obligations, forcing their tenants to live in deplorable conditions and leading to a dangerous explosion that displaced dozens of residents and cost the District hundreds of thousands of dollars,鈥� Schwalb said in the release.

D.C.’s Department of Buildings Director Brian Hanlon added in the release that his office is “proud to support this lawsuit,” while Chief Tenant Advocate Johanna Shreve said landlord neglect “causes chaos and grief for tenants 鈥� and drains taxpayer dollars that are badly needed elsewhere.”

Brown said the planned cuts could cost Maryland schools and universities more than $3 million and threaten counseling programs that support students’ mental health.

鈥淥nce again, the U.S. Department of Education is trying to eliminate grants that Maryland schools rely on to provide critical mental health and counseling services for our children,鈥� . 鈥淲e joined this lawsuit because our children鈥檚 well-being should never be traded away to fit a political agenda.鈥�

The lawsuit argues the department is unlawfully trying to terminate grants that Congress approved to expand mental health services in schools. State officials said the move would jeopardize programs at Bowie State University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, which train future school counselors and mental health professionals.

Maryland and the other states were told in April 2025 that the congressionally-approved grants would be stopped because they conflict with President Donald Trump’s administration’s priorities.

They claim the Education Department is targeting the mental health grants because of their perceived support for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Brown, along with a coalition, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington in July 2025 to stop the department from cutting the grants. They got an order from the court saying the cuts were unlawful in December of that year, according to a news release. The court also issued a permanent injunction to forbid the department from executing the cuts.

In the statement, Brown’s office alleges that the Trump administration “has admitted most of the grants should have been continued, but they have nonetheless engaged in an ongoing campaign to hinder, threaten, and ultimately try to eliminate the mental health grants” in Maryland and other coalition states.

The coalition is seeking a court order to block the grants from being terminated while the legal challenge proceeds.

鈥�Terminating the grants would result in the loss of millions of dollars in mental health services to Maryland elementary and secondary school students,鈥� Brown’s office said in the release.

When someone is trying to leave an abusive or dangerous situation, the first step is deciding to go. But coupled with that decision is finding out how to get to safety. If getting to a safe place, shelter or counseling requires multiple bus transfers or planning around transit schedules, it may feel impossible to get away. Deciding to get help is one thing, getting to it is another.

Hope Rides, a national partnership between the Alliance for HOPE and Uber, launched to help solve that problem. Through Hope Rides, Uber gives participating Family Justice Centers free ride credits that those Centers can use to support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking in their communities. This partnership helps enable individuals and families reach the services they need, including trauma-informed care, shelter, medical treatment, legal help, counseling and other services.

“Transportation is a lifeline to survivors who are seeking safety, hope, and healing,” said Catherine Johnson, president and CEO of Alliance for HOPE International.听

The role of Family Justice Centers

Family Justice Centers were designed to spare survivors the exhausting and often traumatic process of navigating multiple agencies in multiple locations and repeatedly retelling their story to access the help they need. By bringing services together under one roof, Family Justice Centers make it easier for survivors to connect with advocates, law enforcement, prosecutors, counselors, legal assistance, childcare support and other critical resources in one place, helping them find safety, support and a path forward.

The model only works, though, if the survivor can get there.

The biggest obstacle is geography. Dr. Denise McCain, director of the Prince George’s County Family Justice Center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has seen the problem up close. She runs the only court-led family justice center in the country, located about 10 miles from Washington D.C. which serves one of the largest jurisdictions in the state. But this center is not easy to get to on public transit alone.

According to Dr. McCain, “Inaccessibility creates barriers, and it prevents them from getting the help that they need.”听

She shared a story of a client who had spent years planning her exit, finished a job-training certificate program and finally landed work. Then, on the morning of her first day, her abuser slashed her tires.听

That would usually be a huge impediment. But because of Hope Rides, “we were able to send Uber to her to get her to work for her first day,” McCain said. As a result, the survivor kept the job, moved out, and in McCain’s telling, is now doing well. Most people never think twice about a ride to work; in this case it was what her new life depended on.听

A program that鈥檚 growing

This story is one of many.

Since launching in July 2025, Hope Rides has provided more than 3,000 rides to survivors and covered more than 30,000 miles.

The credits aren鈥檛 limited to rides. Through Uber Eats, a center can send a hot meal, diapers or basic necessities to a family in crisis.

This year the program is expanding to serve 30 Family Justice Centers across 17 states. This expansion will bring Centers within reach of thousands more people across the country.

That expansion was announced this spring at CASA Pinellas in St. Petersburg which is where Florida’s only Family Justice Center is located. CASA CEO Lariana Forsythe said a ride can determine the outcome of a case. Without one, she said, a survivor may have “to tell their story over and over” across a string of offices, often making the process become too overwhelming to finish. Getting people to the center, she said, is the step that every other step depends on.

More than a ride

At Alliance for HOPE International, the work is grounded in the Science of Hope, the belief that a person’s future is not defined by their past and that hope grows when people have both the will and the way to move forward. As Alliance President & CEO Catherine Johnson explains, “Survivors rarely lack the will. Hope Rides helps provide the way.”

Survivors who use Hope Rides said it makes a real difference for them 鈥淚f I didn鈥檛 have a way to get there, I don鈥檛 know if I would have ever reached out for help. That ride made it possible for me to take my first step toward safety,鈥� said one survivor who used Hope Rides in Oregon.

For Uber, the program is one part of a broader effort to improve safety for women and other vulnerable riders, alongside in-app safety features, reporting tools and partnerships with anti-violence organizations. For the survivors who use it, the math is simple. A ride can be the difference between an appointment missed and a first step taken.
