DC firefighters involved in fatal crash could face internal charges

WASHINGTON 鈥 Firefighters involved in a fatal crash with a car in Northeast D.C. have been cleared by prosecutors, but could still face internal charges, a spokesman with D.C. Fire and EMS said Monday.

On March 9, a D.C. fire truck responding to a call struck a car at 12th聽Street and Rhode Island Avenue Northeast.

The driver of the car, Deangelo Green, 32, of D.C., was killed; a pregnant pedestrian was seriously injured and a firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Fire department spokesman Doug Buchanan said that the department 鈥渋s holding on to [the right]鈥 to charge two of the firefighters involved in the crash internally, and has recently filed the paperwork required to notify the firefighters and the union of the possibility.

Buchanan said the department is waiting on the accident report and re-creation from the D.C. police before deciding whether to go ahead with any charges.

鈥淲hat鈥檚 clear,鈥 he said, 鈥渋s that we did not have control of that intersection,鈥 a requirement for a truck to proceed.

He did say, however, that both firefighters are back on duty. The firefighter who was driving the truck at the time is currently not permitted to drive.

Buchanan added that the dashcam of the fire truck wasn鈥檛 working.
