3 dead after being struck by train in Springfield

Three people have died after being struck by a train in Springfield, Virginia, on Wednesday night.

Fairfax County Police say their preliminary investigation shows that two adults and a child were walking on the elevated railroad tracks near Accotink Park Road in Springfield around 8:20 p.m. when they were struck and killed by a train.

All three were declared dead on the scene, according to officials.

The tracks are adjacent to a lake and park that features hiking trails. The railroad bridge carries the tracks over Accotink Creek.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police were not able to provide additional information about the incident. They did not initially identify those killed or say whether they were related.
