A joint statement issued by the nations said they rejected 鈥渄estabilizing鈥 actions in the disputed waters that threaten regional peace.

The announcement commemorated a July 12, 2016, by a tribunal established in The Hague under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, saying the landmark decision is 鈥渁 significant milestone and is final, legally binding and definitive.鈥

China refused to join the arbitration initiated by the Philippines in 2013 after a tense standoff in the contested waters a year earlier that ended with Beijing effectively seizing a .

Beijing rejected the 2016 ruling and continues to defend its claims to virtually the entire sea passage, a key global trade route that has long been feared as one of Asia鈥 most active flashpoints. The areas has been the scene of repeated territorial standoffs involving China and the Philippines, , , Brunei and Taiwan.

鈥淲e reaffirm the Arbitral Tribunal鈥檚 decision that there is no legal basis for China鈥檚 expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea, including those based on `historic rights,鈥欌 the statement said.

The arbitration tribunal largely decided in favor of the Philippines, ruling that under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, 鈥渢here was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources鈥 in the South China Sea outside of its regular territorial areas recognized under the convention.

The convention, largely regarded as the treaty governing the world鈥檚 oceans and seas, took effect in 1994 and has been ratified by more than 170 countries and parties, including China and the Philippines.

In addition to the U.S. and Britain, the other countries listed in Sunday’s statement included the Philippines, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, Italy, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia.

鈥淲e reiterate our strong opposition to any destabilizing or unilateral actions including by force or coercion that threaten peace and stability in the region,鈥 they said.

The nations stressed 鈥渙ur strong opposition to the use of coast guard, military and maritime militia forces to harass, obstruct, intimidate lawful operations by other states at sea or in the air and in so doing endanger the safety of personnel and fishermen and seriously degrade regional peace and security.鈥

鈥淔reedom of navigation and overflight as well as other internationally lawful uses of the sea as reflected in UNCLOS鈥 must be upheld, the countries said, adding that the territorial disputes should be resolved peacefully based on the 1982 U.N. convention.

China did not immediately respond Sunday, but in a statement issued recently through its embassy in Manila, Beijing said it would never recognize the 2016 ruling that it called 鈥渋llegal, null and void.鈥

鈥淭he award will not alter the historical and factual basis for China鈥檚 sovereignty over the islands of the South China Sea and their adjacent waters,鈥 the Chinese embassy in Manila said, adding that the ruling 鈥渨ill not weaken China鈥檚 resolve and determination to safeguard its sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.鈥

Territorial confrontations in the disputed waters have become more prevalent in recent years, particularly between Chinese and Philippine and Vietnamese forces and fishing fleets.

Chinese coast guard ships and support vessels have used , military-grade lasers and dangerous blocking maneuvers against Philippine forces and fishermen from rival claimant countries that have led to collisions in the high seas and high-risk encounters in the air.

The has repeatedly called on China to comply with the arbitration ruling.

The former Biden and current Trump administrations both warned that Washington is obligated to defend the Philippines, its oldest treaty ally in Asia, if Filipino forces, vessels or aircraft come under an armed attack in the disputed waters.

US attacks Iran over ship being hit in Strait of Hormuz; Tehran lashes out again at Gulf Arab states /news/2026/07/united-arab-emirates-warns-public-of-incoming-missile-and-drone-attack-as-explosions-heard-in-qatar-2/ Sun, 12 Jul 2026 04:36:13 +0000 /?p=29423805&preview=true&preview_id=29423805 DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) 鈥 early Sunday morning over an Iranian strike on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz that set the container ship ablaze and forced its crew to abandon it. Iran apparently responded with attacks targeting Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The strait has become the key sticking point in any further negotiations between Iran and the United States to find a permanent end to the war that began back on Feb. 28. About a fifth of all traded oil and natural gas passed through the strait before the war began. Iran鈥檚 grip on it during the war led to a global energy crisis, though since wartime highs of $120 a barrel.

The U.S. military’s Central Command said it hit some 140 targets in the strikes, far more than the last two rounds, and went after missile and drone launch sites, ammunition dumps, communication equipment and other sites.

The attacks 鈥渄egrade Iran鈥檚 ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial vessels freely transiting the strait,” it said.

The new crossfire in the Persian Gulf comes days after suggested an interim deal in the Iran war was 鈥渙ver.鈥

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote online: 鈥淚ran made a poor choice. Now they pay.鈥

Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament and a main negotiator, responded.

鈥淭he era of one-sided deals is OVER,鈥 he wrote on X. 鈥淲e told you: keep your word or pay the price. Reality is knocking.鈥

Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE all attacked

The United Arab Emirates warned the public Sunday of an incoming missile and drone attack as explosions could be heard in nearby Qatar. A missile alert sounded in Qatar shortly after the blasts. Qatar’s military said in a statement it intercepted the incoming Iranian fire.

Meanwhile, missile alerts sounded in Bahrain, an island kingdom in the Persian Gulf home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet. Kuwait’s military said it was intercepting incoming fire.

It wasn鈥檛 immediately clear what locations were under attack in the UAE, which so far hadn鈥檛 been targeted in the latest round of attacks by Iran. The latest attack on the Emirates, home to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, came in May when .

Iran also made a series of claims about attacks elsewhere that were not immediately confirmed.

In the Strait of Hormuz attack, a Cyprus-flagged container ship was hit by Iran and suffered 鈥渟ignificant engineroom damage鈥 and a civilian crew member is missing, U.S. Central Command said.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, overseen by the British military, said the ship had been traveling in a route hugging the shoreline of Oman. That’s been the way ships have gotten in and out of the Persian Gulf while avoiding Iranian territorial waters. The ship’s crew abandoned the vessel as it was ablaze, the center said.

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said multiple vessels 鈥渄isregarded our warnings and instructions to correct their course and proceed along the approved route.鈥 One of them 鈥渨as struck by a warning shot and brought to a stop.鈥

Iran said that the strait would remain closed 鈥渦ntil further notice鈥 and said it would consider targeting 鈥渁dditional enemy bases in the region鈥 if it faced more attacks.

Iranian state media reported U.S. strikes across a swath of southern provinces, including Bushehr, Hormozgan, Khuzestan and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces. It offered no immediate damage or casualty figures from the strikes.

Attacks followed more diplomatic talks about the strait

The latest violence followed Iran and Oman鈥檚 foreign ministers meeting on Saturday to discuss the strait, after days of and that dealt a blow to the interim deal to end the war. The narrow strait sits in both Iran and Oman’s territorial waters, but long has been considered an international waterway.

Oman said it and Iran agreed to keep talking about the Strait of Hormuz 鈥渁t the technical and political levels.鈥 However, Iran offered no statement about the strait being open to all 鈥 something sought by the Trump administration.

Iran鈥檚 new supreme leader, still unseen since the war began, also vowed in his first statement since the , that Iranians would avenge his killing in the war鈥檚 opening strikes on Feb. 28.

Such revenge 鈥渋s the will of our nation and must certainly be carried out,鈥 said in a statement carried on state televisions.

US questions who is in charge in Iran

U.S. officials, speaking Friday on condition of anonymity about the , said the resumption of strikes even before the latest round came as a result of what they described as a rogue faction of Iranian hard-liners who were trying to sabotage the ceasefire.

Iran has insisted its theocracy is unified under the new supreme leader.

After the U.S. wrapped up strikes on Thursday, more attacks reportedly hit Iran, raising questions about who else may be targeting the Islamic Republic.

Israel didn鈥檛 claim them, meaning the Gulf Arab states may have launched them, likely as a means to deter Iran from attacking them again. Iran on Thursday retaliated for U.S. strikes by targeting Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait and Qatar.

The strikes in Iran over two rounds of strikes last week killed at least 17 people and wounded 115 others, Iranian Health Ministry spokesperson Hossein Kermanpour said.

Alvarez鈥檚 112th-minute goal helps lift Argentina past Switzerland 3-1 and into World Cup semifinals /sports/2026/07/argentina-keeps-lineup-unchanged-with-messi-alongside-alvarez-for-world-cup-match-vs-switzerland/ Sun, 12 Jul 2026 04:31:41 +0000 /?p=29423621&preview=true&preview_id=29423621 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) 鈥 Juli谩n Alvarez sent defending champion Argentina back to the with a long-range strike in the 112th minute against Switzerland, while another goal by Lautaro Mart铆nez with seconds left in extra time only served to make the 3-1 victory look a whole lot easier than it was Saturday night.

Alexis Mac Allister also scored off a corner kick from Lionel Messi, helping La Albiceleste gut out another down-to-the-wire thriller and advance to play England on Wednesday in Atlanta. earlier in the day.

鈥淲e’re among the best four,鈥 Alvarez said, 鈥渟o we’re meeting our objectives, and we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. The whole match was hard, and we would have loved to have the win earlier, but we tried to get the win however we could.

鈥淭he opponent was really good but we fought until the end, and finally the goals came.鈥

, but his pursuit of a second World Cup title continues. With Argentina and England joining in the semifinals, it’s the first time the top four teams in the FIFA rankings have all advanced that far.

The game swung in the second half on a call sure to rile up critics who believe Argentina has been favored by officials.

The Swiss had just tied the game on Dan Ndoye’s goal in the 67th minute when Leandro Paredes was shown a yellow card for a tackle on Breel Embolo. But video showed the Swiss player falling before the Argentina midfielder made contact with him, and since Embolo received a yellow card earlier in the match, and Switzerland was left to defend with 10 players.

It was the second time a yellow card has been overturned using the 鈥渕istaken identity鈥 protocol at the World Cup. The rule allows the video assistant referee to intervene when an incorrect player is shown a yellow or red card.

鈥淚 just don鈥檛 understand how VAR can make that kind of decision,鈥 Swiss defender Nico Elvedi said.

Argentina, which is riding a 12-match World Cup unbeaten streak, had looked quite beatable in the knockout rounds. Lionel Scaloni鈥檚 squad needed extra time to squeak past tiny Cape Verde before rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the final 11 minutes of regulation to beat Egypt and earn a date with Switzerland at the home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Swiss, meanwhile, were playing their first World Cup quarterfinal since 1954. They still have never made a semifinal, nor have they beaten Argentina in eight meetings 鈥 three of those in the tournament that matters the most.

Argentina has made its base for the past month in Kansas City, training at the home of MLS club Sporting Kansas City while winning over thousands of new fans. And on Saturday night, they filled Arrowhead Stadium for the second time this tournament, hoping to see Messi make more magic after in the same building a few weeks ago.

It was brutally hot and humid throughout the day, but the temperatures began to fall with the setting sun, producing a picturesque setting for the 100th match of an expanded World Cup, and the final match of the quarterfinal round.

The defensive-minded Swiss had only conceded three goals in five games, and they dominated the ball in the opening minutes. But leave it to Messi, whose eight goals in the tournament are tied for the most with France鈥檚 Kylian Mbapp茅, to send a jolt through a heavily pro-Argentina crowd that included Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

He helped to earn an early corner kick with some nifty footwork, then delivered the ball that Mac Allister turned into a 1-0 lead.

For most of the match, the Swiss struggled to break down an Argentina back line that had conceded two goals apiece in its last two games. And it didn鈥檛 help their cause that they were playing without Johan Manzabi, one of their best goal-scorers, who remained out with a knee injury after missing their round of 16 penalty shootout win over Colombia.

But after forcing Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez into making a couple of tough second-half saves, the Swiss broke through when Ricardo Rodriguez slipped a tidy pass to Ndoye and he easily found the back of the net.

Whatever momentum the equalizer gave the Swiss disappeared with Embolo’s red card a few minutes later.

Argentina turned up the pressure with Mac Allister missing wide with a header in the 89th minute, and Messi creating an opportunity in front of the goal that he sent just wide in the second minute of stoppage time, leaving the game tied into extra time.

Just as they have all tournament, La Albiceleste found a way to keep their quest for back-to-back championships alive.

鈥淲e knew this could happen,鈥 Argentina midfielder Thiago Almada said. 鈥淭hey have top players, very good position, they were trying to find people inside. We knew how to hold up and we made it through.鈥

Conor McGregor suffers early knee injury in return, loses to Max Holloway at UFC 329 /sports/2026/07/connor-mcgregor-suffers-early-injury-in-return-loses-to-max-holloway-at-ufc-329/ Sun, 12 Jul 2026 04:30:42 +0000 /?p=29423942&preview=true&preview_id=29423942 LAS VEGAS (AP) 鈥 Conor McGregor鈥檚 return against Max Holloway at UFC 329 ended at just 1:09 of the first round Saturday night because of a knee injury.

Fighting for the first time in more than five years, McGregor flew across the ring with a flying left roundhouse kick when the match started and landed awkwardly on his right knee.

After attempting to kick and strike Holloway (28-9-0) two more times, it was clear McGregor (22-7-0) couldn鈥檛 finish the scheduled five-round welterweight bout.

鈥淔ive years off in this sport is rough,鈥 UFC President Dana White said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e assuming a blown ACL. That鈥檚 what I assumed when I saw it, and that鈥檚 what the doctors think, too.鈥

Holloway closed a -300 favorite at Bet MGM Sportsbook, which means a bettor would have to lay $300 to win $100. McGregor was a +240 underdog, which means a bettor would win $240 with a $100 wager on the Irishman.

McGregor, who strolled to the ring to the sounds of Notorious Biggie Smalls鈥 鈥淗ypnotize鈥 and the roar of the sold-out crowd, last fought exactly five years and a day before Saturday night.

To the delight of a frenzied audience just hours after his home country of England won its quarterfinal match over Norway in the World Cup, Liverpool鈥檚 Paddy Pimblett (24-4-0) made quick work of Benoit Saint Denis (17-4-0) with a first-round TKO. Pimblett, who closed a +120 underdog, blocked a roundkick, shot in and quickly applied a front headlock to put Saint Denis to sleep for the win in 52 seconds.

In a bantamweight battle, Mario Bautista (18-3-0) defeated Cory Sandhagen (18-7-0) by unanimous decision, after taking advantage of a first-round leg kick and applying pressure in each round after. A flurry of punches in the third round secured the decision.

In a scheduled three-round flyweight bout, Brandon Royval (18-9-0) applied a rear-naked choke on Lone鈥檈r Kavanagh (10-2-0) to win by submission at the 3:40 mark of the final round.

In an absolute shocker to start the main card, a bloodied King Green (36-17-0) overcame a beating for nearly the entire first round before landing a right hand to the jaw of Terrance McKinney (18-9-0) with roughly 20 seconds left, and then finished him off for a TKO at the 4:59 mark.

Lionel Messi鈥檚 World Cup scoring streak ends, but his assist sparks Argentina鈥檚 win over Switzerland /sports/2026/07/lionel-messis-world-cup-scoring-streak-ends-but-his-assist-sparks-argentinas-win-over-switzerland/ Sun, 12 Jul 2026 04:23:16 +0000 /?p=29423989&preview=true&preview_id=29423989 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) 鈥 Lionel Messi had his scoring streak snapped by Switzerland on Saturday night, but the co-leader with France’s Kylian Mbapp茅 in the race for the Golden Boot nevertheless found his way to leave his mark with an assist .

The game was only in the 10th minute when Messi 鈥 who needed some help from a trainer after a blow near his right eye in the second half 鈥 helped to earn a corner kick with some nifty footwork. From there, the Inter Miami star delivered a perfect ball into the box, and Alexis Mac Allister was there to head it home for a 1-0 lead.

Switzerland equalized in the 67th minute and the game eventually went to extra time, but Julian Alvarez sent a rocket into the upper corner of the net in the 112th minute and Lautaro Martinez added a closing goal for good measure for the defending champions.

Now, Argentina will play England in the semifinals .

One of the first questions asked of Swiss coach Murat Yakin before the match was how to stop Messi, who had scored in his last nine World Cup matches, his last six in the knockout round. He also holds the tournament record with 21 career goals.

鈥淭his is a very surprising question,鈥 Yakin replied, jokingly. 鈥淭here are many solutions, and we will try to find the best solution. … We can talk a lot about it, but in the end it has to really translate onto the pitch, and we do have our solutions.鈥

In truth, the Swiss did a good job of holding the dynamic goal-scorer in check.

Messi began his World Cup romp in the same building just over three weeks ago, when he scored his first-ever hat trick in the tourney while sending Argentina to a 3-0 win over Algeria. He had gone on to score eight goals as his team reached the quarterfinal round.

Not everything has been charmed for Messi during the World Cup, though. He missed penalty kicks against both Austria and Egypt, and the second one could have proven catastrophic given Argentina eventually found itself in a 2-0 hole.

But it also was Messi who helped get Argentina on the board in the 79th minute by assisting on Cristian Romero’s header, and it was the unflappable and ageless attacking midfielder who beat Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir four minutes later to level the score.

Enzo Fernandez eventually provided the winner in stoppage time to send Argentina into the matchup with Switzerland.

鈥淗e’s like a machine,鈥 Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said of Messi, whose every World Cup match could be his last in a national team jersey. 鈥淭hose that are not so much acquainted with him might be surprised, and at 39 years of age some people might think he will not rise to the challenge. But I’ve said this before, as long as he wants to be the best 鈥 and I’m not saying this because I’m coaching him 鈥 but because if he wants to continue, he will continue to be the best.鈥

New Zealand leaned again on allrounder Daryl Mitchell to reach 267 after losing the toss and being sent in. Mitchell, whose gritty century in the recent third test against England , top-scored with 65 in an insipid New Zealand batting effort.

Will Young made 49 in an 80-run opening partnership with Henry Nicholls (27) but Michael Bracewell (29), Mark Chapman (27), Tom Latham (25) and Mitchell Santner (21) all failed to capitalize on good starts.

New Zealand was in a position to exceed 300 when it reached the 40th over at 216-4 but its last six wickets fell for 33 runs as it fell short of a total to test West Indies’ batters in home conditions.

Vitel Lawes dismissed Nicholls, Chapman and Bracewell, finishing with 3-54 on debut.

Carty and Hope guide the hosts

Carty and Hope came together with the West Indies solidly placed at 92-2 in the 19th over after opener Akeem Auguste made 38 from 58 balls. The third-wicket pair then paced the innings at between five and six runs an over, keeping the run rate required at less than a run a ball, to guide West Indies to a comfortable win.

There were no signs of hurry or concern at any stage of the run chase. Even with five overs remaining and 37 runs needed, Hope and Rutherford looked under no pressure.

West Indies needed 25 from 24 balls, 19 from 18 and 13 from the last two overs. Hope hit a six from the first ball of the 49th over, took a single and Rutherford hit a six from the fifth ball of the same over to end the chase.

Earlier, Carty reached his half century from 67 balls and Hope followed him to that milestone from 52 balls with four fours and two sixes.

At 64, Carty appeared to have hit his wicket while hitting a six from the bowling of Jacob Duffy. But the umpires ruled the shot was complete before the bails were dislodged and Carty was not out.

He took full advantage of the let-off and reached 95 from 112 deliveries before holing out to Nathan Smith off Bracewell’s bowling.

The next match of the five-game series is at the same venue on Monday.
