Four middle school students were hospitalized after a school bus overturned in Howard County, Maryland, Thursday afternoon.
It happened around 3:33 p.m. in the 7300 block of Old Columbia Road in Columbia. The bus was traveling northbound when it left the roadway, according to a news release from Howard County police. On board were 19 students from Hammond Middle School in Laurel, police said.
A聽message from a school system spokesman called it a “significant bus accident.”

The four students who were hospitalized, two boys and two girls ranging in age from 11 to 14, were said to be “not in serious condition,” according to police.
“They may have hit their heads in the crash. There wasn’t anybody who had any evident or obvious injuries, but we’ve had some complaints of back pain or ‘I bumped my head,’ and we wanted to make sure that those were fully checked out for concussions or anything more serious, and so far, so good,” Howard County police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn said.
All the other students were reunited with their families after some received treatment at the scene of the crash. The driver, 30, was not injured. Police said there’s no indication that she was impaired, but investigators are still looking at whether speed was a factor in the crash.
No other vehicles were involved.
