WSSC says discolored water OK to drink, but not for laundry

WASHINGTON —聽Those with funny-colored water coming out of their faucets aren’t alone.

WSSC says reports of discolored or rusty tap water have been coming in from throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, but it’s nothing to worry about.

“We test the water constantly, so the water meets all the regulations. It’s fine for drinking,” WSSC spokesman Jim Neustadt tells 小萝莉影视.

However, there could be a problem when it comes to laundry.

“It could stain clothes, so we suggest you go to the store and get something called Rit, or some other kind of rust prevention for the washing of clothes,” Neustadt says.

WSSC is trying to find out exactly why the rusty water is appearing now.

One theory is the harsh winter we’ve had.

Neustadt says salt used to clear snow on the roads washes into the Potomac River, but when that river water is pumped out and sent through their treatment plant, the salt is not filtered out and can corrode the inside of pipes.

WSSC wants to hear from those with rusty-colored water.
