New layer of asphalt coming to bumpy stretch of Beltway

WASHINGTON — Commuting on the outer loop of the Beltway between the American Legion Bridge and Tyson’s Corner has been tough lately. Last week, the road was milled for a new layer of asphalt, but this week, it remains unpaved.

“Unfortunately, the heavy rains left us unable to work and finish that paving work last week,” said Michelle Holland, with the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Now that the rain is gone, Holland says crews will be working every night to get the rocky stretch of road paved. As long as the weather cooperates, Holland says, the hope is to have the job done in about a week.

This repaving project is among many going on in Northern Virginia as VDOT works to get many roads repaved before winter arrives.
