WASHINGTON 鈥 A water main break that flooded several Silver Spring businesses Wednesday has been repaired but Flower Avenue remains closed to traffic.
Customers also once again have service, according to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.
However Flower Avenue is closed between Piney Branch Road and Arliss Street while Washington Gas completes a repair. Then the road must be repaired.
The 12-inch main broke at Piney Branch Road and Flower Street at about 10 a.m.
Nicholas Zhu, the owner of Ocean City Seafood, described it as 鈥渁n explosion.鈥 Helen Kim, in front of whose business the main broke, says she was too shocked to dial 911.
WSSC says that claims representatives met with business owners to help them begin the process of filing a claim with the utility.
The pipe the burst was one of two 90-year-old pipes that broke Wednesday. The utility says that more than a third of its pipes are more than 50 years old. The utility replaces about 55 miles of pipe each year.
