More than $600K raised for victims of Silver Spring apartment fire

SILVER SPRING, Md. 鈥撀燗 group working to raise money for victims of last month’s聽deadly explosion at an apartment complex in Silver Spring, Maryland, has raised聽more than $600,000.

Montgomery Housing Partnership has been working with 55 families identified by the Red Cross as being displaced in the Aug. 10 explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments that left seven people dead. Authorities said聽it was a natural gas explosion, but the investigation into what ignited the gas is ongoing.

“There’s been a great outpouring of support from the community,” said the group’s president, Robert Goldman. “It’s been amazing.”

The nonprofit has been focused on helping victims cover funeral-related costs and replacing items such as car keys and important documents. Last week, the group began directly giving the families checks ranging from $3,500 to $9,000, based on family size.

“These funds are intended for each family to use based on their individual needs to help them get back on their feet,” Goldman said.

Montgomery Housing Partnership is accepting donations through Saturday, Sept. 17.

“After that, we’ll tally up what’s left in the fund and do a final distribution,” Goldman said.

Those who would like to donate can mail a check to MHP, 12200 Tech Road, Suite 250, Silver Spring, MD 20904, with 鈥淟ong Branch Fire鈥 in the memo. You can also donate online at .
