FAA could allow car races at western Md. airport

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration says it might be able to resolve an issue that is blocking car races at the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport.

The Cumberland Times-小萝莉影视 (http://bit.ly/1nxFS0M ) reported Sunday that FAA Administrator Michael Huerta has written to Maryland U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin that the FAA would consider permitting the races if organizers provide a form describing the event.

The Potomac Highlands Airport Authority voted earlier this month to bar racing on the tarmac and assist organizers in using property outside the airport operational area, due to concerns about liability and the closing of the facility.

Huerta says the FAA permits other airports to hold non-aeronautical events with temporary partial closures.

Autocross races have been held for 11 years at the airport, which does not have scheduled commercial passenger service.
