The U.S. military earlier said it wrapped up its latest round of attacks targeting Iran after hitting dozen of targets.

Iran鈥檚 paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said it was in the process of launching attacks in response.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP鈥檚 earlier story follows below.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) 鈥 The into Monday morning over an Iranian attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz that set it ablaze and left a crew member missing over the weekend. Iran retaliated by targeting countries across the Middle East.

Missile alert sirens sounded at dawn Monday in Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy鈥檚 5th Fleet. There was no immediate word on damage.

Iranian state media acknowledged the latest attacks on its soil early Monday, describing explosions in several locations with at least one person being killed.

The U.S. military’s Central Command described its forces as hitting dozens of sites in the strikes Monday, including air defense systems, radar sites, missile and drone equipment and small boats. It also underlined the main point of contention now threatening to reignite the Iran war 鈥 who controls the narrow Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil and natural gas once passed.

鈥淭he Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,鈥 Central Command said. 鈥淚ran does not control it.鈥

鈥淯.S. forces are postured and prepared to ensure that freedom of navigation remains available to commercial shipping despite Iran鈥檚 continued unwarranted aggression, harassment, threats and arbitrary declarations.鈥

Iranian attacks on Sunday stretched Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and even Oman 鈥 whose territorial waters with Iran make up the strait.

Iran and the U.S. are nearly at the midway point of the of an interim deal, which was supposed to set up talks for a permanent end to the war. Instead, it has devolved into a series of attacks over the strait and its future, worrying world leaders the Iran war could resume.

鈥淎 return to full-scale hostilities would have catastrophic consequences,鈥 United Nations Secretary-General Ant贸nio Guterres said in a statement.

Fighting focuses on the status of the strait

The U.S. military earlier Sunday said it hit some 140 targets, including missile and drone launch sites, ammunition dumps, communication equipment and other sites 鈥 a far-heavier set of attacks than in two previous rounds of strikes in the last week.

鈥淲e bombed the hell out of them last night,鈥 told NBC鈥檚 鈥淢eet the Press.鈥

Iran retaliated by attacking nations in the region hosting U.S. military forces, while insisting it alone must control the strait and potentially charge vessels for traveling through it.

Iran鈥檚 paramilitary Revolutionary Guard acknowledged in a statement early Monday it had begun a new round of strikes across the Middle East.

鈥淭he era of one-sided deals is OVER,鈥 Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the speaker of Iran鈥檚 Parliament and a main negotiator, wrote. 鈥淲e told you: keep your word or pay the price. Reality is knocking.鈥

Iran described the strait as being closed, while the U.S. military and Trump asserted that the strait remained open. Iran, since the war began back on Feb. 28 with the killing of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has used attacks on vessels in the region to intimidate shippers into not traveling through the waterway.

Iran鈥檚 chokehold on the strait, however, has loosened as the U.S. military provided support to vessels moving along a southern route hugging the coastline of Oman. That new route has angered Iran, which launched repeated attacks on ships using it.

Iran鈥檚 grip on the strait led to a global energy crisis, though since wartime highs of $120 a barrel.

Attacks followed more diplomatic talks about the strait

Trump suggested last week that the interim deal in the war was 鈥渙ver.鈥 But mediators, including Pakistan, Qatar and Egypt, have to reach a final agreement to end the war.

A regional official involved in mediation, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss talks, said efforts to shore up the ceasefire continued Sunday. Pakistan said its foreign minister spoke by phone with Iran鈥檚 top diplomat and urged 鈥渄e-escalation鈥 on both sides.

Iran鈥檚 new supreme leader, , unseen since the war began, on Saturday vowed in his first statement since the , that Iranians would avenge his killing.
