A motion to restore spring break to a full week was passed Thursday night by the Prince George’s County School Board, to applause and cheers from the audience.

鈥淥ur students, employees and their families appreciate the Board鈥檚 action and the state鈥檚 willingness to add flexibility to the school calendar,鈥 said Kevin M. Maxwell, Prince George’s County Public Schools CEO, in a news release.

At the Maryland General Assembly yesterday, lawmakers聽approved a bill allowing school districts to extend the school year by five days without state approval. But the House passed it as emergency legislation, so that it can take effect immediately upon becoming law.

The Senate has yet to do the same, but it is scheduled to meet on Friday.

A spokesperson said Gov. Larry Hogan will sign the bill once it reaches his desk.

Students will return to school April 9.
