WASHINGTON 鈥斅燭here could be a lot more tickets for drivers in Manassas as the city rolls out a camera system on each of its school buses.
All 60 school buses in the Manassas City school bus fleet are聽equipped with a stop arm camera and sensors.
The move is a partnership between the schools and city police to protect kids and stop the increasing incidents of drivers passing school buses when kids are boarding or getting off at a stop.
The system, which has GPS capabilities and an emergency button, detects when another vehicle is passing the bus when its stop arm is extended. Sensors engage the cameras which capture the passing driver’s license plate.
Once reviewed by police, drivers can be fined $250 per violation, which the school system said completely funds the camera program.
