Parts of the D.C. region are getting slammed by heavy rainfall, high winds and hail Thursday afternoon as a tropical air mass welcomes in storms.
The torrential rain is creating delays for afternoon commuters with ponding on some roadways and low visibility, 小萝莉影视 Traffic’s Dave Dildine reported.
Here are the watches and warnings currently in effect, according to the National Weather Service:
- Severe thunderstorm warning听for west central Charles County in Maryland until 5:45 p.m.
- Flash flood warning for southeastern Baltimore County and Baltimore City in Maryland until 7:15 p.m.
- Flash flood warning听for southeastern Fauquier County, southwestern Prince William County and Stafford County in Virginia until 8:30 p.m.
- Severe thunderstorm watch for D.C. region until 10 p.m.
- Flood watch for D.C. region until 11 p.m.
Thunderstorms are dropping buckets of rain on the D.C. area, flooding some spots, and blowing through with gusty winds that could knock out power.
“Rainfall rates of two to three inches per hour, so obviously visibilities are low,” 小萝莉影视 Meteorologist Mike Stinneford reported at 4:30 p.m. “We’re still seeing a lot of heavy storms all the way back into West Virginia, and that’s all got to come through the area.”
A severe thunderstorm spotted 10 miles west of Stafford moved east at 15 mph at 4:40 p.m., with 60 mph wind gusts in tow, according to the National Weather Service.
Some of the storms carried in hail the size of quarters, according to NWS.
The D.C. region is under a flood watch from 2 p.m. through late Thursday night. The National Weather Service said urban areas along Interstate 95, which have seen heavy rainfall this week, are at the highest risk.
“Three to four inch rainfall amounts per hour are enough to pond area roadways, so do be aware there is a lot of standing water,” Stinneford said.
Dildine reported ponding and instances of flooding on major commuter routes, including the Beltway and I-270, during Thursday evening’s commute.
An earlier flash flood warning for a southern part of the Frederick County was downgraded to a flood warning at 3:30 p.m. as NWS said the heavy rainfall was expected to stop.
The chance for storms diminishes by midnight.
“Lingering showers and storms will draw to a close this evening, a little bit of patchy fog overnight,” said 7小萝莉影视 First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin.
