Spotty thunderstorms are sweeping through parts of the D.C. area, with the highest chance for rainfall near and south of D.C., according to the National Weather Service.

“Be mindful of a downpour that has some gusty winds and the potential for some small hail,” 7小萝莉影视 First Alert Meteorologist Mark Pe帽a said. “Otherwise a lot of us are dry, although these spotty showers are in the forecast for the rest of the evening until sunset, after that we’re partly cloudy.”

Earlier severe thunderstorm warnings have expired in parts of Culpeper, Loudoun, Fairfax, Fauquier and Prince William counties. The National Weather Service had warned about the potential for storms, possibly bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail

Tuesday afternoon gave the D.C. region a taste of summer weather ahead of Memorial Day weekend with highs in the 90s and manageable humidity. It marked the second day of a three-day heat wave that began Monday.

Tuesday’s high temperature broke a record at Reagan National Airport, reaching 97 and breaking the record of 96 degrees set in 1911, according to 小萝莉影视 Meteorologist Mike Stinneford.

Dulles International Airport reached 96 degrees, beating the record of 92 degrees set in 1997, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service.

Conditions should stay warm overnight, with lows in the upper 60s to mid-70s. Some spots may not fall below 70.

Wednesday brings more heat and late-day storms ahead of a strong cold front. A few storms could turn strong to severe, with the main threats being damaging winds and hail, National Weather Service Meteorologist Erik Taylor said.

Taylor advised people to stay hydrated if spending extended time outdoors during the heat wave.

A sharp cooldown follows the storms, with highs only reaching the 60s or barely 70 by Thursday and Friday. Some spots may even struggle to reach 60 by the end of the week, marking a significant and rapid change from the heat now blanketing the D.C. area.

With “about 97% percent of the region 鈥 in severe drought,” Taylor said some much needed rain is forecast to fall later this week.

Looking ahead at Memorial Day weekend, you may want to have a backup for any outdoor plans. Saturday is expected to be rainy and some showers could linger into Sunday. There’s a chance for stray showers Monday as well.

“We’re looking at anywhere between 1 and 3 inches, and some locations could even pick up 4 inches by the time we get toward the end of the weekend, and that will help us try to improve the drought conditions across the area,” Taylor said.

Florida man says he may stay on DC’s Frederick Douglass Bridge for another day /local/2026/05/florida-man-says-he-may-stay-on-dcs-frederick-douglass-bridge-for-another-day/ Mon, 04 May 2026 18:15:25 +0000 /?p=29211854
Florida man says he may stay on DC鈥檚 Frederick Douglass Bridge for another day

The man who scaled the Frederick Douglass Bridge in D.C. said Monday that he may stay on the bridge for another day, as authorities continue to monitor the situation.

In a phone call with supporters from activist group CODEPINK and 小萝莉影视’s Alan Etter, Florida鈥慴ased activist Guido Reichstadter said that he had considered climbing down Monday. But he was able to figure out a method to charge his phone, allowing him to stay on top of the Douglass Bridge for a bit longer.

“I’ve got the stamina to stay up here a bit longer,” said Reichstadter, who added that he’s out of water. He estimated that he would stay on the bridge for another day.

People gathered at the bridge Monday to cheer on Reichstadter. In a , he thanked supporters and described his actions as a form of nonviolent protest of the Iran war.

South Capitol Street at the bridge fully reopened after 10 a.m. Monday, 小萝莉影视’s Traffic Center reported. All three outbound lanes are open while one inbound lane is open as Reichstadter remains on the bridge, though pedestrian access on the bridge is blocked.

D.C. Fire and EMS said a high鈥慳ngle technical rescue team has been working with police since Reichstadter climbed one of the bridge鈥檚 arches Friday afternoon.

The incident shut down South Capitol Street in both directions Friday, disrupting the afternoon commute and traffic ahead of a Washington Nationals baseball game at nearby Nationals Park.

D.C. police previously confirmed to 小萝莉影视 that Reichstadter is the same person who scaled the same bridge after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022.

After that earlier incident, the District Department of Transportation said it planned to install permanent safety measures. But a DDOT spokesman said Friday the agency did not proceed because it 鈥渃ouldn鈥檛 find anything safe that wouldn鈥檛 create issues for the bridge.鈥

DC Del. candidate Robert White apologizes after comment on White House correspondents鈥 dinner incident /dc/2026/04/dc-del-candidate-robert-white-apologizes-after-comment-on-white-house-correspondents-dinner-incident/ Sun, 26 Apr 2026 23:35:24 +0000 /?p=29184283 D.C. Council member Robert White deleted a social media post and apologized after a violent security incident outside the White House Correspondents鈥 Association Dinner attended by President Donald Trump.

At 11 p.m., less than three hours after the incident Saturday night, White posted on X: 鈥淟ooks like we need a curfew on the Correspondents Dinner. It’s clear we need to hold the parents responsible.鈥

White was referring to the emergency juvenile curfew authorized by Mayor Muriel Bowser to address recent teen takeovers in parts of D.C.

White later removed the post, and issued the following apology on X: “I’ve deleted an earlier tweet. It was inappropriate and insensitive. I should not have tried to make a point by referring to an incident of gun violence.”

The apology followed a chaotic encounter outside the White House Correspondents鈥 Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton. Officials said a man armed with guns and knives stormed the lobby and charged toward the ballroom as Secret Service agents responded and shots were fired, sending guests diving under tables.

President Trump was rushed off the stage and was not injured.

Officials said the armed man, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was a registered guest at the hotel. He was taken into custody and was expected to appear in court Monday. Police said they believe Allen acted alone but have not identified an intended target or motive.

White is running for the Democratic nomination for the District鈥檚 nonvoting delegate seat in the U.S. House.

Fellow D.C. delegate candidate Kinney Zalesne, who is running against White, issued a statement blasting his actions. “I’m calling on my opponents for DC Delegate to please stop embarrassing themselves and our city,” she said.

Moore defends Maryland stepping in on federal program cuts /government/2026/04/moore-defends-maryland-stepping-in-on-federal-program-cuts/ Sun, 05 Apr 2026 13:17:46 +0000 /?p=29115400 Maryland Gov. Wes Moore defended state intervention to protect residents from federal cuts, arguing that states are increasingly being forced to fill gaps left by Washington on essential programs.

In Moore told CBS 小萝莉影视 senior White House and political correspondent Ed O’Keefe that the federal government reducing or threatening funding for safety鈥憂et programs place an unfair burden on states, which are required to balance their budgets and lack federal borrowing power.

Pushing back on the idea that states can absorb responsibilities such as Medicaid, Medicare, child care and food assistance without long鈥憈erm federal support, Moore said those programs were designed as joint efforts and shifting the cost to states risks destabilizing state finances and harming residents.

“So many of the decisions that this White House is making, they are making with a clear understanding that no state has a budget to say, ‘OK, well, we’ll just take on health care, or we’ll just take on food insecurity.’ We saw that happen last year when the President of the United States broke the law in order to cut SNAP. In fact, we sued them, and we won, and we beat him in court on this,” Moore said, citing Maryland鈥檚 response when the federal government moved to cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

Rather than allow residents to lose access to food assistance, Moore said Maryland moved $63 million from its fiscal responsibility fund to maintain SNAP benefits. The fund is largely supported by capital gains taxes and was used, he said, to prevent families from going hungry because of policy disputes in Washington.

“It is an unfair ask to ask us to take on what should be a joint responsibility, because the federal government has decided to stop doing its job,” Moore said.

Moore framed the move as both a financial necessity and a moral obligation. He said governors are often left making difficult decisions to protect residents when federal leadership pulls back from its role.

He warned that expecting states to permanently replace federal funding is unrealistic and risks unraveling programs millions rely on, adding that Maryland will continue stepping in when federal actions threaten access to food, health care and basic stability.

Title IX probe targets Fairfax County Public Schools /fairfax-county/2026/03/title-ix-probe-targets-fairfax-county-public-schools/ Tue, 31 Mar 2026 18:02:25 +0000 /?p=29099404 The U.S. Department of Education has opened a Title IX investigation into Fairfax County Public Schools to examine whether Virginia’s largest school system properly responded to reports of sexual assault involving an adult student at Fairfax High School.

The Education Department told 小萝莉影视 it will review whether the school district discriminated on the basis of sex in its response to the sexual assault accusations, which came from a dozen female students.

鈥淔airfax County Public Schools (FCPS) received the complaint yesterday and is reviewing it. We are prepared to fully cooperate with the U.S. Department of Education鈥檚 inquiry,” the school system told 小萝莉影视 in an email Tuesday.

Israel Flores Ortiz, an 18-year-old who attends Fairfax High School, has been charged with multiple counts of assault and battery after several female students told police he touched them inappropriately in school hallways. He was arrested March 7 and remains held without bond.

The school system is working with law enforcement as police investigate, according to the statement.

“To maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we cannot share additional details at this point,” FCPS said.

Last week, superintendent Michelle Reid said FCPS has hired an outside law firm to conduct an independent review of the case and determine whether school policies were followed, as 小萝莉影视’s Neal Augenstein previously reported.

The goal is clear: to establish a definitive understanding of what occurred, when it occurred, and confirm that all policies, procedures, and regulations were properly followed. The firm of McGuireWoods will conduct this thorough, objective, and independent review,” the school system wrote in an emailed statement.

The Education Department said its investigation into the school system is of compliance with federal law involving several Northern Virginia school systems, including policies around bathroom use based on students’ gender identity.

小萝莉影视’s partners at 7小萝莉影视 were first to report on the investigation into FCPS’ response to the reported sexual assaults.

The Department of Homeland Security has said Flores Ortiz entered the U.S. illegally in 2024 from El Salvador. He’s scheduled to appear in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for an adjudicatory hearing April 9.

In juvenile court, a judge hears evidence during an and determines whether the defendant is guilty.

Virginia bill targets vape shops that sell to underage buyers /virginia/2026/03/virginia-bill-targets-vape-shops-that-sell-to-underage-buyers/ Fri, 27 Mar 2026 09:55:36 +0000 /?p=29087087 Vape shops in Virginia that sell tobacco products to underage buyers could soon face real consequences after years in a legal gray area.

Del. Patrick Hope of Northern Virginia told 小萝莉影视 he hears from parents often that their children know which vape shops will sell to them 鈥 even though the law prohibits the sale of tobacco or vape products to anyone under 21.

鈥淚鈥檝e heard from parents and I know we鈥檝e seen the proliferation of these vape shops. These liquid nicotine products have flooded our markets in recent years and there hasn鈥檛 been sufficient oversight or regulatory measures in place. And oftentimes these products are making their way in the hands of underage buyers,鈥 Hope said.

A passed by the General Assembly would set up an enforcement system targeting vape shops that repeatedly sell to people under 21. Hope said that if those shops continue to break the law, the state will shut them down.

Hope said a major problem has been a lack of information. “We just haven鈥檛 known who they are. Last year, we passed a law that required these vape shops to register with the Department of Tax, and only 52 actually sent in their registration.”

“We believe that there are close to 10,000 vape shops in the state and we want to make sure that we pull them under this regulatory scheme,” Hope added.

The bill directs the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority, which already enforces alcohol sales laws, to hire inspectors for vape and tobacco shops. Once the bill is signed, Hope said he expects a quick rollout.

鈥淭ypically, bills in the General Assembly go into effect July of the year that they鈥檙e passed. We鈥檒l have an educational program for a few months, but I would think that we would be operational probably by October. 鈥 I think they鈥檒l be doing underage programs probably within the end of this year,鈥 Hope said.

Hope said the legislation earned broad support in the Virginia General Assembly.

The bill now heads to Spanberger for her signature.

Thursday, Fairfax County police said a major drug investigation targeted multiple vape shops, including a dozen Tobacco King vape shops, that are accused of selling illegal items, ranging from drugs to synthetic urine, and laundering money.
