Lizzo is helping a local D.C. go-go band celebrate their 30th anniversary in an amazing way.
The pop star has sampled UCB鈥檚 song 鈥淪exy Lady鈥� for her new album Bitch, which drops on June 5.
Founding UCB member Rock Mikey told 小萝莉影视 that they were thrilled D.C.鈥檚 official music was getting 鈥渋ts flowers.鈥�
鈥淚t鈥檚 a major movement, and for the culture to have someone of her stature鈥� to be inspired by one of our, like, favorite songs鈥� that鈥檚 major,鈥� Rock Mikey said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to do big things.鈥�
Rock Mikey is a longtime Washingtonian. 鈥淚 attended Park View Elementary School. I went to Shaw Junior High School, then I went to Wilson High School,鈥� he said, adding he started UCB 鈥渋n my mother鈥檚 basement back in 1996.鈥�
鈥淲ith me, Trey Marcus, aka G Money, my brother Dundee, my cousin Wooda, rest in peace,鈥� Rock Mikey said. 鈥淢oody, Eric, Peeps, we all started this band, Big Marcus, Big E.鈥�
The collaboration traces back to a connection between Lizzo鈥檚 camp and producer Tay Keith.
鈥淗e got introduced to Go-Go through a relative that attended Howard University鈥� and he took a liking to the song 鈥楽exy Lady,鈥欌�� Rock Mikey said.
Keith met original band member Trey in a studio session. 鈥淎nd two years later it鈥檚 here,鈥� Rock Mikey said.
The news about the song came to Rock Mikey through a publishing company.
鈥淭hey gave me a call and told me that Lizzo鈥檚 camp wanted to sample 鈥楽exy Lady.鈥� We did the paperwork and got the business straight,鈥� Rock Mikey said.
Recently, the band got to connect with Lizzo in person. 鈥淪uper dope personality, very lovable woman,鈥� Rock Mikey said.
鈥淲e actually did a TikTok video that she released a couple days ago鈥� got to chop it up with her, take some pictures,鈥� Rock Mikey said. 鈥淚 really like her.鈥�
Rock Mikey said he is excited that the partnership with Lizzo will help push D.C.鈥檚 鈥渟ound and culture beyond the DMV.鈥�
On Father鈥檚 Day, UCB will perform a special concert at Nats Park.
