Teaching assistant in Va. accused of sticking boy

YORK TOWN, Va. (AP) — A teaching assistant at an autism center in Yorktown faces charges of sticking a boy with push pin.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office tells media outlets that 45-year-old Diane Smith of Hampton is charged with assault and battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Police also charged a teacher, 35-year-old Darcie Badami, with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The charges stem from an incident on Friday at New Horizons Center for Autism.

Police say another staff member told administrators at the center that she saw a teaching assistant stick a push pin several times into 13-year-old special needs student’s arm. She also reported hearing the teaching assistant and another teacher conspiring to cover up the incident.

Executive director Joseph Johnson says the center is cooperating with authorities.

Boston Symphony Orchestra and musicians agree to 3-year deal that avoids possible strike

BOSTON (AP) 鈥� The Boston Symphony Orchestra and its musicians ratified a three-year contract Tuesday, avoiding what could have been the first strike in the ensemble鈥檚 145-year history. The orchestra and management have had strained relations since BSO decided in March to force out music director Andris Nelsons next summer after 13 seasons. The prior contract was set to expire last Sunday and was extended for 48 hours. 鈥淭his agreement marks an important step toward a more collaborative future for the BSO," orchestra management, trustees, the Boston Musicians鈥� Association, the BSO Players Committee and management said in a joint statement released by the BSO. 鈥淚t creates a precedent-setting partnership between musicians and management in artistic planning and centers excellence across all the work we do on our stages and in our communities. It also establishes a truly collaborative process in the search for our next music director.鈥� 鈥淲e are one institution of musicians, staff, and boards, committed to working together in partnership to advance our artistic mission, inspire audiences, and serve Boston, the Berkshires and beyond," the statement added.
